Governance – Centre Renames MCD Zones to Match Delhi’s Updated Administrative Districts
Governance – The Central government has officially revised the names of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) zones by amending the Fourteenth Schedule of the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957. The decision aligns the civic body’s zonal structure with Delhi’s updated revenue district framework, a step intended to streamline administration, improve coordination among government departments, and make public services more accessible for residents.
Amendment Brings Civic and Revenue Boundaries in Sync
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued a notification updating the Fourteenth Schedule of the Act, incorporating revised details of all 250 municipal wards along with their respective zones. The amendment reflects the latest administrative restructuring carried out in the National Capital Territory and aims to establish a common territorial framework for civic and revenue authorities.
According to officials, the alignment is expected to reduce administrative overlap, improve record management, and support smoother implementation of government programmes across different departments.
Delhi Government Highlights Better Coordination
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta welcomed the amendment, stating that adopting a uniform naming system for administrative areas would strengthen coordination between the Revenue Department and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi. She said the updated structure would help various government agencies work with greater efficiency while ensuring that citizens receive services without unnecessary procedural confusion.
The Chief Minister added that a common administrative framework would also support quicker execution of welfare initiatives and simplify interactions between the public and government offices responsible for civic services.
Based on Earlier Revenue Department Reforms
The latest notification follows administrative changes introduced by Delhi’s Revenue Department on December 25, 2025. At that time, the government reorganised the National Capital Territory into 39 sub-divisions and 13 administrative areas. The restructuring was designed to correspond with the city’s civic governance framework, including the 12 MCD zones, the New Delhi Municipal Council, and the Delhi Cantonment area.
Officials believe the formal amendment to the Municipal Corporation Act completes the process by ensuring that both civic and revenue authorities now operate under a consistent geographical nomenclature.
Official Names of the Twelve MCD Zones
Following the amendment, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi’s twelve zones will now be officially known as Outer North, North, North-West, Central North, Old Delhi, Central, West, South-West, South-East, South, East, and North-East.
Authorities expect the revised naming system to improve administrative clarity, facilitate better planning, and enhance data sharing between departments responsible for governance, development projects, and public services.
Standing Committee Election Process Underway
Separately, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi has also begun the process for electing the Chairman and Deputy Chairman of its Standing Committee. Nominations for both positions were submitted on Tuesday.
Current Chairperson Satya Sharma filed her nomination for the post of Chairman, while Satyapal Singh submitted his papers for the position of Deputy Chairman. Elections for both offices are scheduled to take place on July 27.
The Standing Committee plays a significant role in the functioning of the MCD by examining financial matters, approving key proposals, and overseeing several administrative decisions. The upcoming election is expected to determine the committee’s leadership for the next term while the civic body continues implementing administrative reforms introduced under the revised governance framework.
