Sonam Wangchuk – Health Remains Stable as Doctors Continue Close Monitoring in Delhi Hospital
Sonam Wangchuk -Activist Sonam Wangchuk is receiving continuous medical care at Safdarjung Hospital in New Delhi, where specialists are closely observing his health after weeks of fasting.
Hospital authorities said Wangchuk’s overall condition is currently stable, although medical tests continue to show slight changes in his blood parameters because of the physical strain caused by his prolonged hunger strike. Doctors stated that he remains under constant supervision at Vardhman Mahavir Medical College (VMMC) and Safdarjung Hospital to ensure any health complications are identified and managed without delay.
Hospital Continues Intensive Medical Observation
According to the latest health bulletin issued on Sunday, a multidisciplinary team of doctors is monitoring Wangchuk around the clock. While his vital signs are stable at present, physicians noted that the effects of extended fasting can place considerable stress on the body, making uninterrupted medical observation necessary.
The hospital said continuous assessment of his clinical condition, including regular blood investigations, is being carried out to track any changes that may require immediate treatment. Medical teams from both Safdarjung Hospital and the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, are involved in evaluating his health status.
Earlier Concerns Over Medical Treatment
A day before the latest bulletin, hospital officials had stated that Wangchuk had declined intravenous fluids, oral rehydration solution and prescribed medicines despite repeated counselling by the treating doctors. An independent medical expert from AIIMS also advised him to accept the recommended treatment, according to the hospital.
Officials had further stated that consent from his family for the proposed medical intervention had not yet been received at that time, adding another layer of complexity to his treatment plan.
Shifted to Hospital During Hunger Strike
Wangchuk was taken to Safdarjung Hospital by the Delhi Police on Saturday after completing 21 days of his indefinite hunger strike. Before being admitted, he had been continuing his protest at Jantar Mantar in the national capital.
His fast began on June 28 in support of the CJP-led protest over alleged irregularities in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) and the reported deaths of students linked to the examination controversy. The protest has drawn attention from student groups and activists demanding accountability over the issues raised.
Doctors Stress Need for Round-the-Clock Care
Medical experts treating Wangchuk have maintained that prolonged fasting can result in serious complications even when a patient’s condition appears stable. For this reason, they believe uninterrupted medical supervision remains essential throughout his hospital stay.
The hospital said specialists are continuously reviewing his clinical progress and laboratory findings so that any emerging health concerns can be addressed promptly. Doctors emphasized that sustained medical care is necessary due to the potential risks associated with long-term fasting.
Protest Continues Over NEET Allegations
Wangchuk is participating in the indefinite hunger strike alongside three activists associated with the All India Students’ Association (AISA). The protest supports the CJP-led campaign demanding the resignation of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan over allegations related to irregularities in the NEET examination and reported student deaths connected to the controversy.
The demonstration, which began in late June, continues to focus on demands for greater accountability and transparency regarding the issues surrounding the examination. Meanwhile, medical authorities remain focused on Wangchuk’s health, stating that his condition will continue to be closely monitored as doctors provide the required treatment and observation.
