Local Body Elections – Local body elections in Nellore district are emerging as an important political milestone, with all major parties closely watching the developments as they prepare for the 2029 Assembly elections. Although the state government is expected to begin the election process with municipalities, unresolved issues related to ward delimitation and municipal boundaries have created uncertainty over the polling schedule in a few urban local bodies.

Municipal Polls Hold Political Importance

Political parties consider the upcoming municipal, ZPTC, MPTC and gram panchayat elections as an early measure of public opinion. The ruling alliance is expected to campaign on the basis of its governance record over the last two years, while the opposition YSRCP is looking at the elections as an opportunity to rebuild its political strength and reconnect with voters before the next Assembly contest.

Uncertainty Continues in Nellore, Gudur and Kavali

Among the urban local bodies, Nellore Municipal Corporation remains one of the key centres of attention. The present elected council is scheduled to complete its tenure on November 22. However, the government has the authority to conduct elections up to six months before the term officially ends, making an earlier election possible if administrative preparations are completed.

Gudur Municipality has remained without an elected council since June 2019 after it was upgraded to Grade-I municipality. The expansion involved the merger of five neighbouring gram panchayats, a move that later faced legal opposition. Residents from Chillakuru and Chennur challenged the merger before the High Court, which granted interim relief, delaying the election process. The matter is still pending before the court, although supporters of the local MLA remain hopeful that municipal elections will finally take place during the upcoming cycle.

Kavali Dispute Moves Towards Resolution

Kavali Municipality also experienced a prolonged delay in holding elections due to a legal dispute involving the proposed merger of Chowdaripalem Gram Panchayat. Local residents opposed the decision, claiming it was politically motivated, and obtained a stay order from the court.

The dispute has now been resolved after both parties agreed that Chowdaripalem would continue as an independent gram panchayat. Following this understanding, the legal case was withdrawn, removing a major obstacle that had prevented municipal elections in Kavali for several years.

Administrative Preparations Continue

Election officials indicated that Atmakur and Buchireddypalem municipalities currently face no major legal complications that could delay the election process. At the district level, administrative changes following the reorganisation of districts are also expected to affect the composition of local representative bodies.

Officials said the total number of ZPTC and MPTC constituencies in Nellore district is likely to be revised. As part of the restructuring, the number of ZPTC seats is expected to come down to 34, reflecting the new administrative boundaries.

Panchayat Elections Expected on Schedule

While legal disputes continue to affect a few municipalities, rural local body elections are expected to proceed without major interruptions. Nearly 700 gram panchayats across Nellore district are likely to go to the polls under the normal election schedule, providing voters in rural areas with the opportunity to elect their local representatives.

With both urban and rural elections carrying significant political value, the outcome of these contests is expected to offer an early indication of voter sentiment well before the 2029 Assembly elections. Political observers believe the results could influence party strategies and shape the political narrative across the district in the coming years.
