CharDhamYatra – Uttarakhand Suspends Pilgrimage Amid Heavy Rain and Landslide Threat
CharDhamYatra –The Uttarakhand government has temporarily suspended the Char Dham Yatra after persistent rainfall, landslides, and adverse weather conditions affected several key pilgrimage routes across the Himalayan region. Authorities said the decision has been taken as a preventive measure to ensure the safety of thousands of devotees travelling to the sacred shrines.
The suspension follows fresh weather warnings issued by the India Meteorological Department, which placed several parts of the state under red and orange alerts due to the likelihood of intense rainfall. Officials reported multiple landslides and road blockages on important stretches leading to the Char Dham temples, making travel unsafe for pilgrims.
Government Prioritises Pilgrim Safety
State officials said the temporary halt applies to all movement towards Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri until weather conditions improve and road connectivity is restored. According to the administration, pilgrim safety remains the highest priority, and the yatra will resume only after authorities confirm that all routes are secure for travel.
The Garhwal Commissioner has instructed district administrations in the affected areas to ensure that pilgrims already en route are accommodated at safe locations. Local authorities have also been directed to stop any further movement towards the shrines until damaged roads are thoroughly inspected and declared fit for travel.
Communication Measures to Avoid Confusion
The state administration has asked officials to provide regular and verified updates through media platforms and official communication channels. The aim is to prevent misinformation and help travellers make informed decisions during the period of disrupted weather.
Authorities appealed to devotees not to rely on rumours circulating through unofficial sources. Instead, pilgrims have been advised to follow alerts and instructions issued by district administrations and other government agencies until the situation stabilises.
Strong Pilgrim Turnout Despite Weather Challenges
Even with recurring spells of rain during the pilgrimage season, the Char Dham Yatra has continued to witness a significant number of visitors this year. Data released by the Uttarakhand Tourism Department’s Yatra Division shows that by Sunday evening, a total of 4,484,429 pilgrims had completed visits to the Char Dham shrines and Hemkund Sahib.
Among the four temples, Badrinath received the highest number of devotees with 1,521,381 visitors. Kedarnath recorded 1,409,668 pilgrims, while Gangotri welcomed 699,387 visitors. Yamunotri was visited by 646,235 devotees during the ongoing season. In addition, 207,758 pilgrims travelled to Hemkund Sahib, reflecting the continued popularity of the annual pilgrimage despite weather-related interruptions.
Authorities Continue Monitoring Conditions
Officials said emergency teams remain deployed at vulnerable locations where rainfall has increased the risk of landslides and road damage. Continuous monitoring of weather forecasts and on-ground conditions is underway, and the administration will periodically review the suspension based on updated assessments.
Pilgrims currently staying along the yatra route have been advised to remain at designated shelters and avoid independent travel until fresh clearance is issued. The government said coordinated efforts are being made to maintain essential services and provide assistance wherever required during the temporary suspension.
The administration reiterated that any decision to restart the Char Dham Yatra will depend entirely on weather improvements and confirmation that travel routes are safe for public movement.
