Encroachment –The Delhi government has intensified efforts to remove illegal structures standing in the way of public infrastructure projects, with the latest action focusing on improving road connectivity in northwest Delhi.
The Delhi government on Tuesday demolished an unauthorised shrine built on government land along the road connecting Pitampura and Shalimar Bagh. According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the structure had become an obstacle to the ongoing road-widening project, which is expected to ease congestion and improve traffic movement for thousands of daily commuters using the corridor.
Road Expansion Project Moves Ahead
Officials said the removal of the encroachment will allow construction work to progress without further delays. The road expansion is aimed at creating a wider and more efficient route between Pitampura and Shalimar Bagh, reducing travel time and improving overall traffic management in the area.
The CMO stated that the operation forms part of a broader campaign to eliminate illegal occupations of public land that interfere with infrastructure development. The government believes that clearing such obstructions is essential for delivering better transport facilities and improving urban mobility across the national capital.
Zero-Tolerance Policy on Illegal Construction
The state government reiterated that it is following a strict policy against unauthorised construction and illegal occupation of government property. Officials said no structure that violates planning regulations or blocks development work will be allowed to remain, regardless of its nature.
Authorities have maintained that enforcement measures are being carried out to protect public assets and ensure that civic projects are completed on schedule. The administration has also stressed that future violations will be dealt with firmly under existing legal provisions.
Large-Scale Enforcement Across Delhi
The anti-encroachment campaign has gathered significant momentum over the past several weeks. Government figures show that since June 1, authorities have demolished 94 illegally constructed buildings across different parts of Delhi. In addition, 114 properties have been sealed for violating building regulations and mandatory fire safety requirements.
Officials noted that enforcement activities increased sharply following the Malviya Nagar fire incident on June 3. Since that date, demolition teams have removed 63 illegal structures. The largest single-day operation took place on June 3 itself, when 22 unauthorised buildings were demolished during coordinated action.
Sealing operations have also continued at a rapid pace. Nearly 97 buildings have been sealed after inspections found violations, with June 7 witnessing one of the biggest drives in which 79 properties were sealed in a single day.
Multiple Agencies Conduct Joint Operations
Government departments have been working together to strengthen enforcement across the city. Officials from the revenue department inspected 124 locations spread across Delhi’s 13 districts, taking action wherever irregularities were identified.
The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), and other civic agencies have jointly conducted demolition, sealing, and inspection drives to ensure compliance with planning regulations and public safety standards.
Government Plans Stronger Monitoring Mechanism
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has said the administration remains committed to eliminating unauthorised construction, illegal encroachments, and violations of fire safety rules. Alongside ongoing enforcement, the government is also working on a long-term system designed to prevent fresh illegal construction from emerging in the future.
Meanwhile, the Delhi Development Authority has strengthened monitoring on land under its jurisdiction. Officials have been instructed to identify buildings with major departures from approved building plans and initiate strict legal action. Architects responsible for serious planning violations may face blacklisting, while Flying Squads and Quick Response Teams have been directed to increase surveillance and enforcement in development zones and land-pooling areas.
