The fire erupted shortly before midnight on Sunday at the Na Ladprao music bar in Bangkok. According to officials, flames quickly moved across the ceiling before reaching the main entrance, creating dangerous conditions for customers attempting to escape. Early reports indicate that heavy smoke, crowded surroundings, and possible obstacles near exit routes may have contributed to the high number of casualties.
Investigators spent Monday examining the heavily damaged building, where the most severe destruction was found near the ceiling. Burned structural materials, ash-covered furniture, and debris remained throughout the venue as forensic teams gathered evidence to establish the sequence of events.
Electrical Fault Among Key Possibilities
Thailand’s Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, said a musician performing inside the venue reported seeing smoke coming from an electrical circuit breaker near the stage moments before the electricity failed. Shortly afterward, witnesses heard what appeared to be an explosion, followed by thick smoke spreading rapidly across the bar.
Police are examining whether an electrical malfunction involving lighting, sound systems, or wiring may have started the fire. Investigators are also inspecting the materials used in the ceiling, particularly decorative elements that may have been highly combustible.
In addition, authorities are checking whether gas cylinders stored in the kitchen played any role in worsening the incident.
Safety Features Under Investigation
Fire safety specialists believe the design and interior materials of the venue will be central to the investigation. Experts reviewing images and videos from the scene noted that decorative plastic materials and possible foam-based soundproofing may have accelerated the spread of the flames.
Officials are also assessing whether emergency exits were fully accessible during the evacuation. Preliminary findings indicate that one rear exit may have been partially blocked by furniture, while another reportedly had a damaged exit sign and a sliding door without a functioning handle.
Although sprinkler systems are considered an important safety feature, some specialists noted that ceiling-level fires spreading through combustible materials can remain difficult to control even when sprinklers are installed.
