Gadar – Anil Sharma Praises Ameesha Patel’s Lasting Impact as Sakeena
Gadar – Actress Ameesha Patel received an emotional tribute from filmmaker Anil Sharma during her appearance on India’s Best Dancer Season 5, where he revisited her work as Sakeena in the 2001 blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha.

Sharma’s message brought back memories from the making of the film, particularly the effort Patel put into shaping Sakeena’s character. He said she rehearsed each sequence extensively and approached the role with commitment throughout the production.
Director Recalls a Powerful Scene From the Film
The director specifically mentioned a scene involving Sakeena and a Maulvi, in which the character expresses her faith that Tara Singh will return for her. According to Sharma, Patel performed the moment with such conviction that it left the crew visibly moved.
He said the scene had created an emotional atmosphere on set, with several people in tears after the take. Sharma also described Patel as an important part of the Gadar family, saying that her association with the film would always remain special to the team.
Ameesha Patel’s Role as Sakeena Remains Closely Remembered
Patel played Sakeena, a young Muslim woman from a respected family, opposite Sunny Deol’s Tara Singh. Their characters formed the emotional centre of the film, which was set against the backdrop of the Partition of India in 1947.
The story followed Tara Singh, a Sikh truck driver, and Sakeena as they faced social divisions, family pressure and the violence of the era. The film explored their relationship while showing the challenges faced by people separated by the India-Pakistan border during Partition.
Sharma’s appreciation on the dance reality show highlighted how strongly Patel’s portrayal continues to be associated with the film more than two decades after its release.
Filmmaker Reflects on His First Meeting With the Actress
In his message, Sharma also recalled meeting Patel for the first time. He praised her screen presence and said she appeared to have retained the same charm and warmth he remembered from the early days of Gadar.
His remarks reflected the long professional connection between the director and actress, who later reunited for Gadar 2. The sequel, released in 2023, brought back Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel as Tara Singh and Sakeena, continuing the story of the popular on-screen pair.
Gadar Became a Major Hindi Cinema Success
Released in 2001, Gadar: Ek Prem Katha emerged as one of the biggest commercial successes of its time. Directed by Anil Sharma, the film featured Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel and Amrish Puri in key roles.
The movie became widely known for its dramatic storytelling, patriotic setting and memorable action scenes. One of its most discussed moments showed Tara Singh uprooting a hand pump, while the train sequence near the climax also became a lasting part of popular Hindi cinema culture.
Music Played a Key Role in the Film’s Popularity
The soundtrack of Gadar added significantly to its appeal. Songs such as Main Nikla Gaddi Leke, Udd Jaa Kaale Kaanwa and Hum Juda Ho Gaye became widely popular after the film’s release and continue to be recognised by audiences.
With Sharma’s latest message, the spotlight once again turned to Ameesha Patel’s contribution to Gadar. Her portrayal of Sakeena remains one of the defining performances of her career and an important part of the film’s enduring legacy.
