MonsoonAlert – Orange Warning Issued as Storms and Rain Lash Mumbai Region
MonsoonAlert – Mumbai and neighbouring Raigad district have been placed on alert after weather authorities warned of thunderstorms, lightning activity and rain spells on Tuesday. The advisory, issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) based on information from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), urges residents to remain cautious as unstable weather conditions are expected across parts of the region. Wind speeds in isolated locations may reach between 30 and 40 kmph during the period of concern.
Orange Alert in Effect for Mumbai and Raigad
According to the IMD, an Orange Alert was activated at 7:00 am for Mumbai and Raigad and is expected to remain valid for the following three hours. The alert highlights the possibility of sudden thunderstorms, lightning strikes and moderate rainfall that could affect daily activities and transportation in certain areas.
Authorities have advised people to stay informed through official weather updates and avoid unnecessary outdoor exposure during periods of intense weather activity.
Southwest Monsoon Continues Its Advance
The latest weather developments come as the Southwest Monsoon continues to strengthen and expand across western and central India. Meteorologists stated on Monday that the monsoon has progressed further into Maharashtra and is likely to spread into additional parts of the state, including Mumbai, within the next 48 hours.
A statement released by the Regional Meteorological Centre said the monsoon has already advanced across larger portions of the central Arabian Sea, Maharashtra and Telangana. It has also covered the remaining areas of Karnataka while extending into parts of Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Jharkhand and Bihar.
Conditions Favour Further Rainfall Activity
Weather experts noted that atmospheric conditions remain favourable for the monsoon to continue advancing across more regions over the coming days. Areas expected to witness further monsoon progress include remaining sections of the central Arabian Sea, additional parts of Maharashtra, Telangana and Odisha, along with portions of Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and Bihar.
The IMD has linked the expected rainfall increase to stronger westerly winds accompanying the seasonal weather system. As a result, widespread rainfall and thunderstorm activity is forecast across several districts of Maharashtra over the next few days.
Heavy Rain Forecast for Konkan and Interior Maharashtra
The weather department has predicted heavy rainfall at isolated locations in the Konkan region from June 22 to June 26. During the same period, parts of Madhya Maharashtra are likely to experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning, gusty winds and moderate to heavy showers.
For the Marathwada region, forecasters expect light to moderate rainfall along with thunderstorms and lightning between June 22 and June 24. Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to remain prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Fishermen Advised to Avoid Sea Travel
A separate advisory has been issued for fishermen operating along the South Maharashtra-Goa coastline. The IMD has recommended that fishing activities be suspended from June 22 to June 26 due to rough sea conditions.
Weather officials warned that wind speeds over coastal waters could reach 40 to 50 kmph, with stronger gusts touching 60 kmph. Such conditions may create hazardous situations for small and medium-sized vessels.
Risk of Flooding and Transport Disruptions
The IMD cautioned that intense rainfall could trigger water accumulation in low-lying urban areas, localized flooding and flash flood situations in some locations. Disruptions to road, rail, air and ferry services are also possible if rainfall intensity increases.
Agricultural areas may face damage to standing crops and horticultural plantations, while coastal regions could witness rough sea conditions and strong wave activity.
Pre-Monsoon Showers Bring Relief and Challenges
On Monday, several parts of Mumbai, including Bandra East, received pre-monsoon showers accompanied by lightning and thunderstorms. While the rainfall provided relief from humid and hot weather conditions, it also caused temporary waterlogging and traffic congestion in some localities.
Officials have advised citizens to follow traffic updates, avoid standing near water bodies during thunderstorms and seek shelter in secure locations whenever severe weather conditions develop.
