Telegram – Messaging App Returns After Temporary Government Suspension Ends

Telegram –  Google reinstated Telegram services on Tuesday morning after the temporary government-imposed restriction on the messaging platform concluded at midnight on June 22. The app, which had been unavailable through official distribution channels during the suspension period, gradually became accessible again for users across the country.

Telegram app restored after temporary government ban ends

Access Resumes Following Expiry of Restriction

Several users reported that Telegram services had already started functioning before the official restoration was widely noticed. However, the application remained unavailable on Apple’s App Store for a few additional hours and was reportedly relisted around 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

An inquiry sent to Apple seeking clarification on the timing of the app’s return did not receive an immediate response.

Government Did Not Extend the Ban

According to sources familiar with the matter, authorities allowed the original suspension order to expire as scheduled, with no indication of an extension or revised timeline. The temporary ban had been enforced until June 22, and the decision remained unchanged after its conclusion.

The government had initially ordered the restriction after raising concerns about Telegram’s alleged inability to effectively curb the circulation of leaked examination materials, misleading information, and other fraudulent content connected to major competitive examinations.

Concerns Linked to Examination Integrity

Officials had expressed particular concern over the spread of fake and leaked question papers related to the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Authorities argued that such activities could undermine the integrity of the examination process and create confusion among students and stakeholders.

Before the suspension was imposed, representatives of Telegram reportedly met government officials on June 3. During those discussions, concerns regarding content moderation, misinformation, and examination-related violations were highlighted.

Following those consultations, the Centre decided to block Telegram and its related web services, including access through browser-based versions of the platform, until June 22.

Restrictions on Editing Feature Continue

Although Telegram has resumed operations, certain restrictions remain in place. The platform has reportedly been instructed to keep its message-editing functionality disabled until June 30 as part of the broader compliance measures introduced during the review period.

Authorities have not publicly detailed whether additional assessments will take place before the feature is fully restored.

NEET Re-Examination Conducted Without Major Issues

The NEET re-examination was conducted on June 21 amid heightened scrutiny over examination security and information sharing. So far, there have been no reports indicating significant fraudulent activities or security breaches linked to the re-test.

Officials continue to monitor developments surrounding digital platforms and their role in preventing the spread of unauthorized examination materials.

Telegram Founder Criticised the Decision

Telegram founder and chief executive Pavel Durov publicly objected to the temporary suspension, arguing that the platform should not face a nationwide restriction because of the actions of a limited number of users who allegedly shared leaked examination content.

Durov also suggested that commercial competition may have played a role in the decision. He claimed that major industry players, including rivals in the messaging sector, could have influenced the move against Telegram. However, no official evidence has been presented to support those allegations.

The temporary ban and subsequent restoration have reignited discussions about platform accountability, content moderation responsibilities, and the balance between digital freedom and regulatory oversight in the country’s online ecosystem
