VillageRenaming – Residents of a village in Chhattisgarh’s Kawardha district have welcomed a significant change that they believe will strengthen their sense of identity and self-respect. The village, previously known as Gadhabhata, has officially been renamed Sonpur following the publication of a government notification, bringing an end to a long-standing concern among local people regarding the old name.
Official Gazette Confirms New Name
The announcement was made during a visit by Chhattisgarh Deputy Chief Minister and local MLA Vijay Sharma, who arrived in the village with a copy of the official Government Gazette confirming the change. The notification formally replaced the village’s earlier name with Sonpur, a title that residents consider more positive and reflective of their aspirations.
For many villagers, the previous name had become a source of discomfort over the years. Although it existed in official records for decades, residents often felt uneasy when introducing their hometown to others. The renaming has therefore been viewed as an important step toward restoring community pride.
Demand for Change Raised by Villagers
According to local residents, the issue had been discussed for a long time within the community. Villagers argued that place names often carry cultural and social significance, influencing how communities are perceived both internally and externally.
Recognising these concerns, efforts were initiated to pursue an official change. The process involved multiple administrative stages, beginning with proposals at the local level and progressing through government procedures. The proposal was later reviewed by the state administration, approved by the Cabinet, received the Governor’s assent, and was ultimately published in the Gazette.
Deputy Chief Minister Highlights Cultural Significance
Addressing villagers during the event, Vijay Sharma said that a village’s name is closely connected to its heritage, traditions, and collective identity. He described the transition to Sonpur as an important development that would help strengthen local pride and reinforce the village’s cultural image.
The Deputy Chief Minister encouraged residents to actively adopt the new name in daily conversations and official interactions. He noted that widespread usage would help establish the identity of Sonpur for future generations and ensure that the change becomes a permanent part of the village’s legacy.
Similar Changes Underway in the Region
Sharma also pointed to another example within the region where a village previously known as Chandalpur was renamed Chandanpur. The move was presented as part of a broader effort to replace names that residents considered inappropriate or socially insensitive with alternatives that better reflect local sentiments and cultural values.
Local residents expressed optimism that such initiatives would contribute to a stronger sense of belonging and help preserve community dignity while maintaining historical continuity.
Development Funds and Welfare Outreach Announced
Alongside the renaming ceremony, the Deputy Chief Minister announced development assistance worth ₹7.5 lakh for the village. The funding is expected to support local infrastructure and community improvement projects aimed at enhancing public facilities.
The event also served as an opportunity to inform residents about welfare programmes. Sharma highlighted the upcoming PM Awas Plus survey scheduled for June 24 and urged eligible families to participate. He stressed the importance of ensuring that deserving households are identified so that housing benefits can reach those who need them most.
With the official recognition of Sonpur and the announcement of development support, villagers hope the change will mark the beginning of a new chapter focused on progress, dignity, and community pride.
