AcademicFreedom – A teachers’ association has urged the governing authorities of a Delhi University college to reconsider the installation of CCTV cameras inside classrooms, arguing that such measures could affect the academic atmosphere and the independence of teaching practices.

The issue was raised after the Indian National Teachers’ Congress (INTEC) submitted a formal representation on Friday to the chairperson of Jesus and Mary College. Concerns Over the Learning Environment

In its communication, the teachers’ body emphasized that classrooms are designed to serve as spaces where students and faculty can engage in thoughtful discussions, exchange diverse viewpoints, and develop critical thinking skills. According to the association, the presence of surveillance equipment within these spaces may alter the natural dynamics of academic interactions.

The letter highlighted that effective education depends heavily on open communication and mutual trust between teachers and students. Continuous monitoring, it argued, could create an environment where participants feel less comfortable expressing opinions or exploring complex subjects freely.

INTEC also pointed to the potential consequences of recording lectures and classroom conversations on a regular basis. The organization stated that constant surveillance may contribute to a sense of discomfort among both teachers and students, leading them to become more cautious about their participation in discussions.

The association warned that such conditions could encourage self-restraint and reduce the spontaneity that is often essential for meaningful academic engagement. It further noted that educators may find it difficult to conduct discussions on sensitive or challenging topics if they feel their classroom activities are being continuously observed and recorded.

Safety Measures and Educational Priorities

While recognizing the importance of maintaining security and safety on educational campuses, the teachers’ organization stressed that these objectives should be balanced with the primary mission of higher education institutions. It argued that security arrangements should not interfere with teaching practices or limit the freedom required for effective learning.

The association maintained that institutions must carefully evaluate whether surveillance mechanisms inside classrooms are necessary, particularly when such measures have the potential to influence the quality of academic discourse. According to the letter, preserving an environment that supports independent thinking and intellectual exploration remains a key responsibility of educational institutions.

Appeal to the Governing Body

As part of its appeal, INTEC requested the college’s governing body to review the matter and direct the administration to remove the CCTV cameras installed within classrooms. The organization expressed the view that academic spaces should remain free from unnecessary monitoring so that educators and students can continue to engage openly in the teaching-learning process.

The matter has brought renewed attention to the broader debate surrounding surveillance, privacy, and academic autonomy in higher education institutions.
