ElephantSafety – A serious railway accident involving an elephant in Chhattisgarh’s Raigarh Forest Division has prompted the state forest department to initiate a detailed investigation and review existing wildlife protection measures near railway tracks. The incident occurred in the Gharghoda Forest Range, located nearly 200 kilometers from Raipur, where the animal sustained critical injuries after being hit by a train.
Senior Officials Reach Accident Site
Following reports of the collision, senior forest authorities immediately visited the location to assess the situation and oversee emergency response efforts. A specialized veterinary team was deployed to provide urgent medical care to the injured elephant. Officials coordinated treatment measures on-site while monitoring the animal’s condition.
Three-Member Panel Constituted
To determine the circumstances that led to the accident, Chhattisgarh Principal Chief Conservator of Forests Arun Pandey has directed the formation of a three-member inquiry committee. The panel has been tasked with conducting a comprehensive examination of the incident and identifying any shortcomings in current safety arrangements.
The committee will be led by Priyanka Pandey, who serves as the In-Charge Chief Wildlife Warden and Field Director of the Achanakmar Tiger Reserve in Bilaspur. She will be joined by Arvind PM, Divisional Forest Officer of the Raigarh Division, and Jitendra Kumar Upadhyay, Divisional Forest Officer of the Dharamjaigarh Division.
Report Expected Within Two Weeks
Forest department officials have instructed the committee to carry out a detailed inspection of the accident site and evaluate all relevant factors connected to the collision. The team has been asked to submit its findings and recommendations within a period of two weeks.
Authorities expect the report to help identify operational gaps and suggest practical measures that can improve the safety of wildlife movement in areas crossed by railway lines.
Focus on Railway and Wildlife Coordination
In response to the incident, the forest department has also issued directions to forest divisions situated along railway corridors across the state. These divisions have been asked to strengthen coordination with railway authorities and accelerate the implementation of safety-related infrastructure.
Among the measures being emphasized are the installation of speed-control signage and other warning systems designed to reduce the risk of accidents involving wild animals. Officials believe that improved communication between railway and forest departments can play an important role in preventing similar incidents in the future.
Rising Need for Elephant Protection
Forest officials stated that the inquiry represents an important step toward identifying vulnerable stretches of railway tracks where wildlife faces increased danger. The department intends to enhance preventive strategies aimed at reducing collisions between trains and elephants while promoting safer movement corridors for wildlife.
Chhattisgarh is home to an estimated 450 roaming elephants. Districts such as Raigarh, Jashpur, Korba, and Surajpur have witnessed a noticeable rise in elephant activity over recent years. As elephant populations continue to move across forested landscapes and transportation routes, authorities are placing greater emphasis on balancing infrastructure development with wildlife conservation.
