MaritimeSecurity – Prime Minister Narendra Modi used the platform of the G7 Summit on Tuesday to highlight the importance of protecting maritime routes and ensuring the safety of seafarers amid rising tensions in West Asia. Addressing leaders from major economies, including US President Donald Trump, Modi stressed that those working at sea should be able to carry out their responsibilities without fear and that uninterrupted shipping lanes are essential for global commerce.
Focus on Maritime Safety Amid Regional Tensions
The prime minister’s remarks came shortly after the deaths of three Indian crew members in a military strike involving a merchant vessel near Oman. Against this backdrop, Modi emphasized that nations share a collective responsibility to safeguard maritime trade corridors and protect the lives of sailors who support international commerce.
He noted that disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have affected global trade flows and contributed to economic uncertainty. According to Modi, secure sea routes are not only vital for regional stability but also for maintaining confidence in international supply chains.
Dialogue and Diplomacy as the Path Forward
During the outreach session titled “Forging New Partnerships and Rebuilding International Solidarity,” Modi reiterated India’s longstanding position that conflicts cannot be resolved through confrontation alone. He argued that meaningful and lasting peace can emerge only through dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation among nations.
Welcoming ongoing efforts aimed at reducing tensions in West Asia, he expressed concern over the human and economic costs of the conflict. The prime minister observed that friendly nations in the region have suffered significant losses, underscoring the urgency of peaceful solutions.
Trust Identified as a Key Global Asset
Expanding beyond immediate geopolitical concerns, Modi spoke about the growing importance of trust in international relations. He said that while technology, natural resources and markets remain important, mutual confidence between countries has become one of the most valuable assets in the modern world.
The prime minister pointed out that today’s interconnected global environment links countries through energy supplies, food security, healthcare systems, digital networks and economic activity. In such a setting, strong partnerships become indispensable, but their success depends on trust and transparency.
He cautioned that technology and trade mechanisms should not be used to advance narrow interests at the expense of broader global welfare. Such practices, he said, contribute to mistrust and weaken international cooperation.
Message for Inclusive Global Development
Modi also drew attention to the aspirations of developing nations, often referred to collectively as the Global South. He stated that these countries seek a greater role in shaping international development rather than remaining passive recipients of assistance.
According to the prime minister, global cooperation should be based on equality and mutual respect. He argued that development partnerships must move beyond traditional donor-recipient relationships and instead encourage countries to work together as equals.
This approach, he said, would help build a stronger foundation for sustainable growth and long-term prosperity across regions.
India Highlights Its Development Model
Sharing India’s experience, Modi said the country’s international engagement continues to be guided by a people-centric approach focused on the welfare of humanity. He highlighted progress in financial inclusion, healthcare access, digital identity systems and technology-driven public services.
The prime minister also pointed to initiatives supporting women’s participation in development and economic growth. He stated that India’s experience demonstrates how development programs achieve better outcomes when they reflect the aspirations and needs of ordinary citizens.
India’s Participation in the G7 Summit
Modi attended the summit in France as the leader of a guest nation invited to participate in discussions on major global challenges. The G7 consists of Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, while the European Union also takes part in the grouping’s activities.
The forum serves as a platform for coordinating responses to global economic, financial and geopolitical issues. Modi arrived at the summit venue after concluding a two-day visit to Slovakia.
