FireSafety –  Three people, including two women, lost their lives after a major fire erupted in a residential building located in southeast Delhi’s Govindpuri area during the early hours of Friday. Authorities said the incident triggered a large-scale rescue effort as residents struggled to escape thick smoke that quickly spread through the structure.

Emergency Teams Launch Rescue Operation

According to officials, emergency services received information about the fire at approximately 2:24 am. The blaze broke out in a five-storey residential building situated in Tughlakabad Extension. Police personnel were among the first responders and immediately began evacuating residents trapped inside the premises.

As the situation intensified, fire department teams and medical staff were dispatched to the location. Several fire engines and ambulances joined the operation to assist in rescue efforts and provide emergency medical care to affected residents.

Several Residents Shifted to Hospitals

Authorities said eight people were rescued from the smoke-filled building and transported to nearby medical facilities, including Safdarjung Hospital and the AIIMS Trauma Centre. Among those rescued, a man and two women later died while undergoing treatment.

Officials confirmed that two other injured residents remain in critical condition and continue to receive medical attention. The condition of the remaining rescued occupants has not been reported as life-threatening.

Fire Brought Under Control After Intensive Effort

Fire department personnel worked for nearly two hours to contain the blaze. Officials stated that multiple fire tenders were deployed after receiving the emergency call. The fire was eventually brought under control at around 4 am, preventing further spread to neighboring properties.

During the operation, firefighters faced challenges due to heavy smoke accumulation inside the building. Rescue teams climbed to the rooftop and gained access after breaking open a locked terrace gate. Two young girls who had sought refuge on the terrace were safely evacuated and taken to hospital for evaluation.

Ground Floor Identified as Origin Point

Preliminary findings indicate that the fire started in the parking area located on the ground floor. Several parked vehicles, including scooters, motorcycles and a bicycle, were engulfed in flames. The fire and smoke rapidly moved upward through the building, affecting multiple residential floors.

Officials reported that the ground floor along with the first and second floors sustained extensive damage. Upper levels of the building also suffered partial destruction due to heat and smoke exposure.

Electrical Fault Under Investigation

Investigators suspect that an electrical short circuit may have triggered the incident. Early assessments suggest that the flames spread rapidly after reaching parked two-wheelers, including an electric scooter that was reportedly connected to a charging source at the time.

Authorities emphasized that the exact cause has not yet been officially established. A detailed forensic examination and technical investigation are expected to determine the circumstances that led to the fire.

Recent Fire Tragedies Raise Safety Concerns

The incident has once again highlighted concerns regarding fire safety measures in densely populated urban areas. It comes shortly after another devastating fire accident in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar area that resulted in the deaths of more than twenty people, including foreign nationals.

Officials have urged building owners and residents to ensure proper electrical maintenance, functional emergency exits and adherence to fire safety regulations to reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.
