Travel Advisory – India Repeats Call for Citizens to Leave Iran Amid Rising Tensions
Travel Advisory – India has once again urged its citizens to avoid travelling to Iran and advised those already in the country to leave as soon as possible through available transportation options. The latest appeal comes as security concerns grow following renewed military activity in the region.
Embassy Issues Fresh Warning
In its latest advisory, the Indian Embassy in Tehran reiterated that Indian nationals should not undertake non-essential travel to Iran. The mission said the recommendation was being repeated in light of recent developments that have heightened uncertainty and raised security risks across parts of the country.
The embassy also encouraged Indians currently residing in Iran to make arrangements to depart at the earliest opportunity using available commercial and other transport services.
Escalation Follows Military Exchanges
The renewed advisory was issued shortly after reports emerged of Israeli airstrikes targeting areas in central and western Iran. The strikes came in response to missile attacks launched from Iranian territory, further increasing concerns about a broader regional conflict.
Indian authorities have been closely monitoring the evolving situation and continue to assess the safety implications for citizens living or travelling in the region.
Advisory Covers All Categories of Citizens
Officials clarified that the guidance applies to all Indian nationals in Iran, including students pursuing higher education, business professionals, religious pilgrims, and tourists. Authorities have urged citizens to remain vigilant and stay in contact with official channels for the latest updates.
The government has repeatedly stressed the importance of following embassy instructions and avoiding unnecessary movement in areas that may be affected by security developments.
Earlier Precautionary Measures
India had previously issued a cautionary advisory on April 7 when tensions in the region began to rise sharply. At that time, Indian citizens were advised to remain where they were for 48 hours as a precautionary measure while authorities assessed the security environment.
That warning followed comments by US President Donald Trump, who had warned of severe consequences if Iran did not meet a deadline related to the Strait of Hormuz blockade. The remarks contributed to growing international concern over the possibility of a wider confrontation.
Efforts to Facilitate Safe Departures
Following a temporary ceasefire announced in April, the Indian Embassy encouraged citizens to use the calmer period to leave Iran without delay. Officials viewed the pause in hostilities as an opportunity for safe departures before conditions could change again.
Government agencies have continued coordinating with diplomatic missions to assist Indian nationals and provide guidance regarding travel arrangements and safety measures.
Thousands of Indians Still in Iran
Official figures indicate that around 9,000 Indian citizens, including a significant number of students, were present in Iran when the conflict intensified after strikes on Iranian targets by Israel and the United States on February 28.
Since then, nearly 1,800 Indians have returned home. However, authorities estimate that approximately 7,500 Indian nationals remain in Iran. With tensions showing signs of renewed escalation, the government is continuing to advise citizens to prioritize their safety and consider leaving the country while transportation options remain available.
