Politics – Bihar MLA Faces Uncertainty After Court Conviction
Politics – A legal setback has placed the political future of a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator from Bihar under scrutiny after a Delhi court found him guilty in a case linked to a fatal celebratory firing incident that occurred several years ago.

Court Finds MLA Guilty in Fatal Firing Case
Raju Kumar Singh, the BJP MLA representing the Sahebganj Assembly constituency and a former state minister, was convicted by Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court in connection with the death of a woman during a New Year’s Eve gathering in 2018. The incident took place at a farmhouse located in the Fatehpur Beri area of South Delhi.
According to the court’s findings, the celebratory firing resulted in the death of a 45-year-old woman who was present at the event. After reviewing the evidence, the court held the legislator responsible under provisions related to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.
Charges Framed Under IPC and Arms Act
The court convicted Singh under Section 304 (II) of the Indian Penal Code, which deals with culpable homicide not amounting to murder. In addition, he was found guilty under Section 30 of the Arms Act for violating conditions associated with a firearm licence and related regulations.
The verdict marks a significant development in a case that has remained under judicial examination for several years following the fatal shooting incident.
Sentencing Hearing Scheduled
While the conviction has already been pronounced, the punishment is yet to be determined. The court is scheduled to hear arguments from both sides regarding the sentence before announcing the final quantum of punishment.
Until the sentencing process is completed, the exact legal consequences facing the legislator remain uncertain. However, the court has directed that he be taken into custody following the conviction.
Legislative Membership Could Be at Risk
The outcome of the sentencing hearing is expected to have important political implications. Under existing legal provisions governing elected representatives, a prison sentence exceeding two years can result in the disqualification of a legislator from holding membership in the Assembly.
As a result, Singh’s position as an elected representative could come under threat if the punishment awarded crosses the prescribed threshold. Political observers and legal experts are closely watching the next stage of the proceedings because the sentencing decision may determine not only the extent of the punishment but also the future of his legislative career.
Maximum Punishment Provision
The offence for which the MLA has been convicted carries a maximum sentence of up to seven years in prison. The final punishment will be decided after the court considers submissions from the prosecution and the defence during the upcoming hearing.
The case has once again highlighted the legal and political consequences that can arise from celebratory firing incidents, particularly when such actions lead to loss of life. The sentencing order, expected after the hearing, will be a crucial development in determining both the legal outcome of the case and its impact on Bihar’s political landscape.
