BorderSecurity – India Advances Digital Border Operations With New LPMS Platform
BorderSecurity – India is set to take a major step toward modernizing its border infrastructure with the launch of the Land Port Management System (LPMS), a new digital platform aimed at streamlining operations at land border crossings. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah is scheduled to unveil the system in New Delhi on Tuesday, marking a significant development in the country’s efforts to strengthen border management through technology.

Digital Platform to Transform Land Port Operations
The introduction of LPMS reflects the government’s broader focus on improving efficiency, transparency, and security at international land crossings. Designed as an integrated digital solution, the platform will connect multiple operational processes across land ports into a single system, enabling faster and more coordinated management of trade and passenger movement.
Officials believe the platform will help reduce procedural delays while improving communication among agencies involved in border operations. The initiative is also expected to support smoother cross-border commerce and enhance the overall experience for transport operators and travelers.
New Facilities to Support Border Stakeholders
Alongside the launch of LPMS, Amit Shah will inaugurate newly developed accommodation facilities at the Dawki Land Port in Meghalaya and the Srimantapur Land Port in Tripura. These facilities have been created to provide improved support infrastructure for border personnel and various stakeholders involved in port activities.
The development is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen operational capabilities and improve working conditions at key border locations.
Integrated Services for Faster Processing
The LPMS platform introduces a fully digital workflow covering both cargo and passenger-related procedures. Key services available through the system include slot reservations, online payments, shipment tracking, and single-window clearance mechanisms.
The platform has also been linked with important national digital networks such as ICEGATE, the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP), and the motor vehicle ecosystem. This integration is expected to improve coordination between departments while ensuring greater transparency and interoperability across border operations.
Enhancing Trade and National Security
Government officials view the project as an important step toward building a modern border management framework capable of supporting growing trade volumes and regional connectivity. By enabling real-time exchange of logistics and regulatory information, LPMS is expected to bring land ports closer to the level of digital efficiency already seen at airports and seaports.
The initiative aligns with India’s long-term development objectives, including efforts to improve infrastructure, facilitate trade, and strengthen national security through technology-based solutions.
Role of the Land Ports Authority of India
The Land Ports Authority of India (LPAI), which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs’ Department of Border Management, oversees the development and management of land ports across the country. The authority plays a key role in promoting international trade, regional cooperation, and cross-border connectivity.
At present, LPAI manages 15 operational land ports located along India’s borders with Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh, and Myanmar. These include Attari and Dera Baba Nanak in Punjab, Rupaidiha in Uttar Pradesh, Raxaul and Jogbani in Bihar, Darranga in Assam, Dawki in Meghalaya, Agartala, Srimantapur and Sabroom in Tripura, as well as several other strategic border points serving trade and passenger movement.
The launch of LPMS is expected to further strengthen the country’s border infrastructure by introducing a more efficient, transparent, and technology-enabled system for managing cross-border activities in the years ahead
