Cinema – The upcoming film Governor explores a critical chapter in India’s economic history, offering audiences a closer look at the financial challenges that reshaped the nation in the early 1990s.
With growing anticipation ahead of its release, Governor has emerged as one of the most talked-about films of the year. Led by acclaimed actor Manoj Bajpayee, the movie revisits the turbulent financial crisis that confronted India in 1991, a period that ultimately paved the way for sweeping economic reforms. The recently unveiled trailer has generated significant interest, hinting at a compelling narrative rooted in real events and national transformation.
A Film Aimed at Younger Audiences
Speaking about the project before its release, Manoj Bajpayee said the film could help younger viewers understand a phase of Indian history that many may know little about. According to the actor, the story highlights the circumstances that existed before economic liberalisation and explains how major policy decisions helped shape the country’s present-day financial landscape.
He noted that many members of Generation Z have grown up in a vastly different environment and may not fully appreciate the economic conditions that existed just a few decades ago. The film, he believes, offers valuable historical context while remaining engaging as a cinematic experience.
Looking Back at a Different India
Bajpayee reflected on a time when many conveniences that are now considered commonplace were absent from everyday life. He pointed out that large shopping malls, widespread consumer brands and several modern lifestyle features had not yet become part of Indian society. Through its storyline, Governor attempts to recreate that era and present a realistic picture of the country during a period of significant transition.
The actor explained that the film is not only about economics but also about helping audiences understand how dramatically India has evolved over the past three decades.
Intensive Preparation for the Role
To portray his character convincingly, Bajpayee said he invested considerable effort in understanding the economic concepts central to the story. Although he does not come from an economics background, the actor studied topics related to macroeconomics to ensure accuracy while discussing the film and portraying its themes.
He revealed that he maintained detailed notes and reference materials while preparing for the project. Concepts such as balance of payments and other key economic indicators became an important part of his research, helping him gain a deeper understanding of the issues faced by policymakers during the crisis.
Story Inspired by a Defining National Crisis
Based on real events, Governor focuses on one of the most challenging moments in India’s economic journey. Set against the backdrop of the financial emergency that gripped the country in the early 1990s, the film explores the pressure, uncertainty and critical decisions that influenced the nation’s future direction.

The film is directed by Chinmay Mandlekar and produced under the Sunshine Pictures banner by Vipul Amrutlal Shah. Aashin A. Shah serves as co-producer, while the screenplay has been written by Suvendu Bhattacharyjee, Saurabh Bharat, Ravi Asrani and Vipul Amrutlal Shah.
Music for the film has been composed by Amit Trivedi, with lyrics penned by Javed Akhtar. Backed by a strong creative team and a story drawn from a pivotal historical moment, Governor is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on June 12, 2026.
