Investigation Continues at Fire-Ravaged Property

On Thursday, forensic experts continued their examination of the damaged building in Hauz Rani as authorities worked to determine the exact cause of the blaze. The area remained heavily restricted, with police maintaining a security cordon around the site. Many nearby shops, homestays and guest accommodations kept their shutters down, reflecting the sombre atmosphere that had overtaken the locality.

Scattered debris from the destroyed property remained visible, while several mattresses used during the rescue efforts lay nearby, serving as stark reminders of the desperate attempts made by residents to save those trapped inside the burning structure.

Residents Recall Moments of Panic

People living in the area described scenes of fear and chaos as flames rapidly spread through the building. Long-time resident Mohammad Haji Isril said the community had never experienced a disaster of such scale.

According to him, neighbours responded immediately when they noticed the fire. Residents rushed toward the building without hesitation, trying to assist guests who were trapped inside. Isril particularly highlighted the efforts of a local mattress shop owner named Arman, who quickly brought mattresses onto the street to help cushion the fall of individuals attempting to escape from upper floors.

He said the action reflected the spirit of the community and suggested that authorities should consider compensating the businessman for the losses incurred while helping save lives during the emergency.

Disturbing Scenes Leave Community Traumatized

Another resident, Siraj, said the horrifying images from Wednesday’s tragedy would remain etched in the memories of local people for years. He recalled watching individuals leap from the building in a desperate attempt to escape the flames while emergency responders and residents worked frantically below.

Siraj described the incident as one of the most heartbreaking events the neighbourhood had ever witnessed. The panic, confusion and helplessness experienced by both victims and rescuers left a deep emotional impact on those present.

Many residents, he added, are still struggling to process the events they witnessed as the community mourns the lives lost.

Rescue Efforts Continued Despite Dangerous Conditions

A witness identified as Shahdab said he noticed thick smoke rising from the building while heading to work. Along with other residents, he joined rescue efforts using whatever resources were available, including ladders, ropes and mattresses.

He explained that even after firefighters managed to bring the flames under control, dense smoke continued to fill the building. Rescue teams and volunteers entered the premises to search for survivors, where cries for help could still be heard from some rooms.

According to Shahdab, several victims were found unconscious and were immediately taken out for medical treatment, while others could not be saved despite the extensive rescue operation.

Foreign Guests Among Those Affected

The tragedy also impacted international visitors staying at the property. A West African national who had been lodging at the facility said he narrowly avoided the disaster because he was away when the fire broke out.

However, he revealed that several of his friends were among the victims, including a Nigerian citizen. The loss has added an international dimension to a tragedy that has shaken both local residents and the wider community.

As investigators continue their work and families mourn the victims, the incident has once again raised concerns about fire safety standards and emergency preparedness in densely populated urban areas.
