Cricket – Zimbabwe Set to Host Landmark Women’s T20 Series Against South Africa

Cricket –  Zimbabwe will welcome South Africa’s women’s cricket team for a five-match T20 International series in September, marking a significant step forward for the women’s game in the country. The series will be the first bilateral women’s contest between the two nations to be staged in Zimbabwe, providing local fans with a rare opportunity to watch top-level international action on home soil.

Zimbabwe women host south africa t20 series

All five matches will be played at Queen Sports Club in Bulawayo. The opening encounter is scheduled for September 11, with the remaining fixtures set to take place on September 13, 15, 17 and 19. Hosting every match at a single venue is expected to create a focused and competitive environment throughout the tour.

Important Milestone for Zimbabwe Women

The upcoming series represents another key chapter in Zimbabwe’s efforts to strengthen its women’s cricket programme. Earlier this year, the national side completed its first-ever white-ball tour of Pakistan, gaining valuable international exposure against strong opposition.

Zimbabwe’s women last played a home international series in September 2025 when they faced the United Arab Emirates. Since then, the team has spent much of its schedule competing abroad, including tours to Pakistan and New Zealand. The return of international cricket to home grounds is therefore viewed as an important opportunity for both players and supporters.

Limited History Between the Two Sides

Although Zimbabwe and South Africa have shared the international stage before, meetings between their senior women’s teams have been rare. The two nations have faced each other only twice at senior level, with both matches taking place in a quadrangular One-Day International tournament held in Potchefstroom in 2017.

Because of that limited history, the forthcoming T20 series offers a fresh chapter in the sporting relationship between the neighbouring countries. It will also provide a useful benchmark for Zimbabwe as it measures its progress against one of the strongest teams in women’s cricket.

Chance to Rebuild After Qualifier Setback

The series arrives at a crucial point for the Zimbabwe squad. The team recently endured disappointment in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Global Qualifier, where it narrowly missed securing a place in the main tournament.

Facing a leading international side such as South Africa is expected to offer valuable experience and help the players prepare for future competitions. Competitive matches against higher-ranked opposition are often regarded as an essential part of team development and long-term growth.

Officials Expect Positive Impact

Zimbabwe Cricket Managing Director Givemore Makoni expressed optimism about the tour and its importance for the sport within the country.

According to Makoni, the organisation is pleased to host South Africa Women for what is expected to be a memorable series. He noted that South Africa remains among the strongest teams in world cricket and said the matches would give Zimbabwe’s players an excellent chance to test themselves against elite competition in familiar conditions.

He also highlighted the broader benefits of the tour, saying that regular exposure to high-quality international cricket can support the development of the national team while encouraging more young girls to become involved in the sport.
