Tourism – Uttarakhand Strengthens Media, Honors Leaders and Celebrates Everest Triumph
Tourism – Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami continued his visit across the Kumaon region on Monday with a focus on infrastructure growth and community-based initiatives. The tour began in Haldwani, where the Chief Minister laid the foundation stone for a modern media centre being developed at a cost of nearly Rs 6.75 crore. The upcoming facility is expected to improve working conditions and technical support for journalists operating in the region.

During the event, Dhami highlighted the importance of the media in a democratic system and said the government was committed to strengthening communication facilities and ensuring better resources for reporters and media professionals. Officials present at the ceremony stated that the centre would include advanced amenities designed to meet present-day newsroom requirements.
Focus on Community Welfare in Khatima
Later in the day, the Chief Minister reached Khatima, where he inaugurated several public welfare projects worth around Rs 89 lakh. Among the key developments introduced were the “Hi-Tech Didi Library” and a newly built gymnasium aimed at encouraging education and fitness among local residents.
The library project has been designed to provide modern learning facilities, especially for women and students in the area. Local representatives said the initiative would help improve access to books, digital resources and study infrastructure in smaller towns. The gymnasium, meanwhile, is expected to support youth participation in sports and physical activities.
Dhami also interacted with local citizens and officials during the visit, reviewing the progress of ongoing development works in the district. The government has been placing increased emphasis on improving civic facilities in semi-urban and rural areas of Uttarakhand.
Bhagat Singh Koshyari Receives Padma Bhushan
In another major development connected to Uttarakhand, former Chief Minister Bhagat Singh Koshyari was awarded the Padma Bhushan for his contribution to public affairs. President Droupadi Murmu presented the honour during the Civil Investiture Ceremony held at the Ganatantra Mandap in Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Koshyari, widely known as “Bhagat Da” in Uttarakhand, has had a long political and public service career spanning several decades. Born in Palandhura village in 1942, he began his professional journey as a lecturer before gradually entering public life and politics.
Over the years, he held several key positions, including Cabinet Minister in Uttarakhand’s first government after statehood. He also briefly served as the Chief Minister of Uttarakhand and later became Leader of Opposition. His political career further expanded with his election to the Rajya Sabha in 2008 and later to the Lok Sabha from the Nainital constituency in 2014. Koshyari also served as the Governor of Maharashtra.
Political leaders and citizens from Uttarakhand congratulated him on receiving one of the country’s highest civilian honours.
NSG Team Creates Everest Record
Uttarakhand also celebrated a significant achievement in mountaineering after a National Security Guard team successfully scaled Mount Everest in record time. The 16-member expedition reached the summit in the early hours of May 23 under the leadership of Major Akhilesh Bhatt from Dehradun.
The team completed the Everest mission in only 20 days from Kathmandu, a feat considered exceptional in high-altitude climbing circles. Officials associated with the expedition credited the achievement to months of disciplined preparation and specialised training.
Before attempting Everest, the team had undertaken climbing exercises at Mount Satopanth in 2025 and completed rigorous winter training sessions in the Lahaul-Spiti region. Several members of the expedition, including Subedar Suresh Kumar, Naik Rahul Singh, Naik Pankaj Singh and Commando Gautam Butola, belong to Uttarakhand.
The successful mission has been widely praised as a reflection of the courage, endurance, and dedication associated with the people of the hill state.
