GazaFlotilla – Several countries across Europe and the Pacific have formally protested against Israel after a controversial video linked to National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir showed detained activists from a Gaza-bound aid mission being restrained and publicly mocked.
The diplomatic backlash intensified after Israeli naval forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla earlier this week while it was heading toward Gaza carrying humanitarian volunteers and activists from multiple nations. Governments including Canada, Italy, France, Spain, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Australia, New Zealand, and Poland have since summoned Israeli diplomats to express concern over the treatment of those onboard.
Canada Seeks Assurances Over Citizens
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that Ottawa had called in Israel’s ambassador to seek guarantees regarding the safety of Canadian citizens involved in the mission. According to officials connected to the flotilla, eleven Canadians were among those detained after the interception.
Carney also criticised Ben-Gvir’s conduct and reiterated that Canada had already imposed sanctions on the Israeli minister over previous remarks accused of encouraging violence. The measures reportedly include travel restrictions and asset freezes.
Video Sparks International Criticism
The controversy largely centres on a short video reportedly shared by Ben-Gvir following the seizure of the vessel. The footage appeared to show several pro-Palestinian activists kneeling with their hands restrained by plastic ties while the minister made remarks directed at the detainees.
The incident drew widespread criticism from international governments and rights groups, many of whom argued that the treatment shown in the recording was degrading and inappropriate. The flotilla itself carried 428 participants representing 44 countries and had departed from Marmaris, Turkey, in an attempt to challenge the long-running blockade on Gaza.
European Governments Demand Explanations
European nations reacted swiftly after the footage circulated online. Italy’s Foreign Ministry summoned Israel’s ambassador and demanded the rapid return of Italian citizens who had joined the mission. Italian officials also lodged a formal protest over the handling of the activists.
In Poland, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced that Israel’s diplomatic representative would be asked to provide explanations and issue an apology regarding the incident. Warsaw described the actions shown in the footage as unacceptable for a government minister.
Spain also joined the diplomatic response. Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares condemned the treatment of the volunteers and described the scenes shown in the video as humiliating. Madrid later summoned Israel’s charge d’affaires to register its objections.
France followed with similar action, with Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot confirming that Paris had demanded clarification from Israeli authorities regarding the circumstances surrounding the interception and detention of activists.
Belgium, Netherlands and Portugal Raise Concerns
Belgium’s government expressed strong concern over the footage and called for the release of those detained during the operation. Officials stated that the images appeared to show humanitarian volunteers being forcibly restrained while their condition was publicly displayed online.
The Netherlands also summoned Israel’s ambassador after Dutch officials labelled the treatment of the activists as disturbing and unacceptable. Portugal issued a formal protest as well, requesting additional details about the naval operation and the handling of passengers aboard the vessel.
Australia and New Zealand Join Diplomatic Response
The criticism expanded beyond Europe as Australia and New Zealand announced similar diplomatic measures. New Zealand Foreign Minister Winston Peters said Wellington had previously imposed travel restrictions on Ben-Gvir due to concerns about his role in undermining peace efforts in the region.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong confirmed that Israel’s senior diplomat in Canberra had been summoned to discuss the incident. Australian officials expressed concern over footage showing restrained activists being mocked after the interception at sea.
The growing international reaction has added further pressure to an already tense situation surrounding Gaza and humanitarian access to the territory. Diplomatic discussions between Israel and several allied nations are expected to continue in the coming days as governments seek explanations over the treatment of the activists and the wider implications of the flotilla operation.
