MedicineStrike – Delhi is preparing for a week of disruptions as pharmacy associations and commercial vehicle operators have separately announced protest actions over growing business and operational pressures.
The national capital is expected to witness two major demonstrations this week after chemist associations and transport unions declared separate strikes linked to regulatory and financial issues. The actions are likely to affect medicine availability and public transportation services across several parts of Delhi-NCR.
Nationwide Pharmacy Strike Scheduled for May 20
The All India Organisation of Chemists and Druggists has called for a countrywide shutdown of pharmacy operations on May 20. The protest is aimed at raising concerns over the increasing presence of online medicine delivery companies and digital pharmacy platforms in the healthcare market.
According to members associated with local chemist groups, small medical stores are facing serious pressure as customers continue shifting toward online applications that offer medicines at significantly reduced prices. Many pharmacy owners believe these pricing models are making it difficult for traditional stores to survive.
A representative linked to Indira Pharmacy stated that independent chemist shops are struggling to match the discounts being offered through online platforms. The representative added that the growing popularity of digital medicine services is directly affecting footfall at physical stores, especially smaller neighbourhood pharmacies.
Local Chemists Voice Business Survival Concerns
Several pharmacy owners across Delhi have expressed support for the strike, saying the issue is no longer limited to competition but has become a question of business sustainability. Shopkeepers argue that local medicine stores provide immediate access to medicines during emergencies and continue to play an important role in community healthcare services.
Rai Medios, who operates a pharmacy in Mahavir Enclave in Dwarka, said many local chemists cannot compete with the aggressive discount structure of online sellers. He confirmed that his pharmacy would remain closed during the protest in support of the nationwide strike.
Pharmacists working in the sector have also urged authorities to consider the long-term impact on traditional medicine retailers. Ali Haider, who has been associated with the pharmacy sector for nearly eight years, said nearby chemist shops often become the fastest and most reliable source of medicines during urgent situations.
He noted that if smaller pharmacies gradually disappear due to financial pressure, consumers may realise their importance only when immediate medical access becomes necessary. He also appealed for policy measures that support local pharmacy businesses alongside the expansion of digital healthcare services.
Commercial Vehicle Operators Announce Three-Day Protest
In a separate development, commercial vehicle unions operating across Delhi-NCR have announced a three-day strike beginning May 21 and continuing until May 23. The protest includes drivers of taxis, autos, and other commercial transport vehicles demanding a revision in fare structures.
Union representatives stated that rising fuel costs, including petrol, diesel, and compressed natural gas prices, have significantly increased operational expenses for drivers. According to them, existing fares are no longer sufficient to cover daily running costs and maintenance expenses.
Transport operators are demanding immediate intervention from the authorities to revise fare rates and provide financial relief to drivers struggling with higher fuel expenditure. The proposed strike may impact daily commuters who rely heavily on auto-rickshaws and taxis across the region.
Authorities Expected to Monitor Situation Closely
With both protests scheduled within the same week, officials are expected to closely monitor the situation to minimise inconvenience for residents. The pharmacy strike could affect medicine purchases for one day, while the transport protest may create travel disruptions in several busy areas of Delhi-NCR.
The developments have once again highlighted the growing concerns among small businesses and service providers dealing with changing market conditions, rising operational costs, and increasing competition from digital platforms.
