Indonesia – PM Modi Begins Jakarta Visit With Focus on Strategic Partnership
Indonesia – Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto at Istana Merdeka in Jakarta on Tuesday, signing the official guestbook as the two leaders began formal discussions during Modi’s state visit. They exchanged greetings and shook hands before the scheduled bilateral engagements at the presidential palace.

Ceremonial reception marks official programme
Modi received a formal ceremonial welcome after arriving in Jakarta, where his visit is expected to strengthen India’s partnership with Indonesia. The programme marked the start of high-level meetings aimed at expanding cooperation in defence, trade, maritime affairs and broader regional issues.
The Prime Minister arrived in Indonesia on Monday for the first leg of his three-country diplomatic tour. His aircraft was escorted by Indonesian Air Force fighter jets after entering Indonesian airspace, while President Prabowo personally welcomed him at the airport. A traditional cultural performance was also organised for the visiting Indian leader.
Fourth visit to Indonesia
The July 6-8 visit is Modi’s fourth trip to Indonesia and comes at the invitation of President Prabowo. It is also the first bilateral visit by the two leaders since India and Indonesia upgraded their relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2018.
The partnership has gained importance as both countries seek to play a larger role in the Indo-Pacific region. India and Indonesia share maritime boundaries and have regularly highlighted the need for secure sea routes, peaceful regional engagement and respect for international law.
Defence and maritime cooperation on agenda
Defence cooperation is expected to feature prominently in the discussions. New Delhi and Jakarta have increased military exchanges in recent years, including joint exercises, official visits and defence industry engagement.
Indonesia’s decision to acquire BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India has also become a notable development in their defence relationship. The deal reflected growing confidence between the two countries and created new opportunities for cooperation in military technology and production.
Maritime coordination is another major area of interest, particularly as both nations are located along important sea lanes used for global trade. Officials are expected to discuss ways to improve cooperation on maritime awareness, naval engagement and regional security.
MAHASAGAR framework highlights regional approach
India’s MAHASAGAR initiative, short for Mutual and Holistic Advancement for Security Across the Regions, remains central to New Delhi’s approach towards maritime cooperation. The framework focuses on security, stability and inclusive development across the wider Indian Ocean region.
Through this approach, India has sought stronger partnerships with countries in Southeast Asia and the Indo-Pacific. Indonesia is considered an important partner because of its strategic location and influence within the region.
Wider diplomatic tour includes Australia and New Zealand
Modi said his overseas visit would build on the momentum in India’s ties with Indonesia, Australia and New Zealand. The tour is expected to cover strategic cooperation, economic engagement and people-to-people connections.
The Jakarta meetings are likely to set the tone for the remaining stages of the Prime Minister’s trip. With both governments placing greater emphasis on regional stability and economic growth, the visit is being viewed as an opportunity to deepen an already expanding relationship.
