Special Exhibitions Planned at the Museum

According to an official statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Museum and Library (PMML), the programmes aim to highlight the contribution of national leaders while encouraging public awareness about museums, heritage conservation, and educational outreach related to culture and history.

As part of the commemorative events, the museum has prepared a dedicated exhibition featuring rare photographs, archived records, and personal belongings associated with HD Deve Gowda. Organisers said the display has been curated to offer visitors a closer understanding of his public life, leadership journey, and political contribution to the country.

Officials associated with the event stated that ethnographic collections from the museum archives will also be showcased during the celebrations. In addition, two documentary-style short films are scheduled to be screened for visitors throughout the day. One of the films focuses on the development and significance of the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, while the second presents an overview of Deve Gowda’s political career and achievements.

Senior Dignitaries Expected to Attend

The event is expected to witness the presence of several notable personalities linked to the museum and the former Prime Minister’s family. Nripendra Misra, Chairman of the Executive Council of the Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya, will attend the programme along with Dr Sowmya Ramesh, daughter-in-law of HD Deve Gowda.

Speaking about the initiative, PMML Director Ashwani Lohani said the museum continues to work toward increasing public participation in understanding India’s political and cultural evolution. He noted that exhibitions and film screenings help connect younger generations with the country’s democratic traditions and diverse heritage.

Deve Gowda’s Political Journey Remembered

HD Deve Gowda served as the 11th Prime Minister of India after taking office in 1996. Before assuming the top constitutional position, he resigned as the Chief Minister of Karnataka on May 30 that year. His tenure at the national level came after decades of active involvement in state and national politics.

Born on May 18, 1933, in Haradanahalli village in Karnataka’s Hassan district, Deve Gowda studied civil engineering before entering public life at an early age. He became politically active in 1953 when he joined the Congress Party and remained associated with it for nearly a decade.

His independent political identity began to strengthen when he contested the Karnataka Assembly election at the age of 28 as an independent candidate. Over the years, he emerged as a significant political figure in Karnataka and later at the national level.

Leadership Role in Karnataka and National Politics

Deve Gowda was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Hassan parliamentary constituency in 1991. He later held leadership responsibilities within the Janata Party and Janata Dal in Karnataka. In 1994, he became the leader of the Janata Dal Legislative Party and subsequently took charge as the 14th Chief Minister of Karnataka.

Political observers often describe his career as deeply connected to grassroots politics and regional development issues. His rise from state leadership to the office of Prime Minister remains an important chapter in India’s coalition-era politics.

The museum authorities said the commemorative programmes are intended not only to honour a former Prime Minister but also to encourage visitors to engage with India’s democratic and cultural institutions through exhibitions, archives, and historical storytelling.
