Fatal Crash Reported on Interstate 65

A 25-year-old Indian student lost her life after a serious road accident occurred near Chicago late Saturday night. The victim was identified as Navya Gadusu, originally from Telangana’s Nalgonda district and residing in Chicago at the time of the incident.

According to officials, the crash took place on Interstate 65 near Crown Point in Lake County, Indiana. Emergency personnel responded to the scene shortly after the collision was reported.

The Lake County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Gadusu was pronounced dead shortly after midnight on Sunday. Authorities stated that she died from severe blunt force injuries suffered during the accident.

Six Others Injured in the Collision

Police said six additional passengers travelling in the same vehicle sustained injuries. Emergency teams transported the injured individuals for medical treatment following the crash.

The Indian Consulate General in Chicago expressed grief over the incident and extended support to the victim’s family. In a statement shared on social media, the Consulate said it was coordinating assistance for both the bereaved family and those injured in the accident.

Officials described the incident as deeply distressing for the Indian community in the region.

Police Explain Sequence of Events

Preliminary findings released by the Indiana State Police revealed that the accident occurred around 11:15 pm local time. Investigators said a red minivan carrying seven adults was travelling slowly behind another vehicle that was reportedly experiencing mechanical problems.

Authorities stated that another car approached from behind and its driver allegedly failed to recognise the reduced speed of the minivan in time. Investigators believe the driver attempted to avoid a collision by steering left, but the vehicle still struck the side of the van.

The impact reportedly forced the minivan off the roadway and into a ditch. Police clarified that the vehicle with mechanical issues was not directly involved in the crash.

Safety Violations Under Investigation

Investigators also disclosed details about the seating arrangements inside the minivan at the time of the accident. According to police, the vehicle only had two standard front seats, while the remaining passengers were reportedly seated on boxes of mangoes placed inside the van.

Officials further stated that several passengers were not wearing seat belts during the journey. Authorities are continuing to examine whether safety violations contributed to the severity of the injuries sustained in the collision.

The investigation remains ongoing as law enforcement officers review evidence and witness accounts connected to the crash.

Growing Concern Among Indian Students Abroad

The death of Navya Gadusu has once again drawn attention to the safety challenges faced by international students living overseas. Thousands of Indian students travel across the United States each year for higher education and employment opportunities, often relying on shared transportation for long-distance travel.

Community members and student groups expressed sorrow over the incident while urging greater awareness about road safety and passenger protection measures.

The tragedy has left family members, friends, and members of the Indian diaspora mourning the loss of a young student whose life ended unexpectedly in the accident.
