Tourism – Ooty Flower Festival Opens With Grand Floral Heritage Displays
Tourism – The annual Flower Festival in Ooty began on Monday with large-scale floral arrangements, heritage-inspired exhibits and colourful decorative installations, marking the start of one of Tamil Nadu’s most visited summer events. The festival, being held at the Government Botanical Garden in the Nilgiris district, is expected to attract thousands of visitors over the next 11 days.

Major Tourist Attraction Returns to Ooty
Recognised as a key part of Ooty’s summer celebrations, the Flower Festival draws tourists from different parts of India as well as international travellers every year. The cool climate, green landscapes and scenic viewpoints of the Nilgiris continue to bring heavy tourist movement into the hill district during the summer season.
Officials said the annual summer festival is traditionally organised in May to promote tourism in the region. However, due to this year’s election-related schedule, only selected programmes are being conducted. Among the events taking place this season are the Rose Show and Flower Show in Ooty along with the Fruit Show in nearby Coonoor.
Rose Show Continues to Draw Crowds
The Rose Show, which started on May 14 at the Government Rose Garden, has already become a major attraction for visitors. Nearly two lakh roses have been used to create decorative arrangements and themed displays across the venue.
One of the most photographed exhibits at the Rose Garden is a bird-shaped floral structure designed entirely with roses and decorative flowers. Tourists visiting the garden have gathered in large numbers to view the colourful installations.
Botanical Garden Hosts 128th Flower Show
The 128th edition of the Flower Show at the Government Botanical Garden will continue until May 28. Nilgiris District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya inaugurated the event, which features a wide variety of flowering plants and imported seeds sourced from several countries.
This year’s exhibition includes flower species such as Geranium, Cyclopin, Balsam, ornamental Calyx, Oriental Lily, Pansy, Marigold, Zinnia and Telmunium. Organisers said these plants were specially cultivated for the annual festival.
Authorities have planted close to one million flower saplings across different sections of the Botanical Garden. In addition, more than 50,000 flower pots displaying blooms in multiple colours have been arranged throughout the venue to enhance the visitor experience.
Floral Installations Highlight Tamil Heritage
A key attraction this year is the recreation of the Chennai Central Railway Station entrance facade using more than one lakh carnations and other flowers. The floral structure has been designed to celebrate Tamil Nadu’s cultural and architectural heritage.
The exhibition also features 26 themed floral models inspired by famous landmarks and traditional symbols from the state. These include displays representing the Ooty Mountain Railway engine, the Mamallapuram temple and the historic temple chariot of Thiruvarur.
Another section of the exhibition showcases decorative arrangements based on the five ancient Tamil landscapes. Organisers said over seven lakh flowers have been used to create these elaborate cultural displays.
Security and Transport Arrangements in Place
With large crowds expected during the festival period, local authorities have announced special arrangements for tourists visiting the Nilgiris district. A local holiday has been declared to manage visitor participation and traffic movement around key tourist areas.
Around 200 police personnel have been deployed for security and crowd management at major venues linked to the celebrations. Special transport services have also been introduced to help visitors travel conveniently between important festival locations.
The Flower Festival remains one of the biggest seasonal tourism events in Tamil Nadu and continues to play a major role in attracting visitors to the Nilgiris during the summer months.
