EnergySecurity – Government Reviews Fuel Supply Situation Amid West Asia Tensions

EnergySecurity –    The Centre on Monday reviewed the country’s preparedness to handle any disruption in fuel supplies and essential commodities arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh chaired the fifth meeting of the Informal Group of Ministers, where officials assessed risks linked to energy supply chains and domestic availability of key items.

The meeting focused on maintaining uninterrupted access to fuel and daily necessities as international crude oil prices continue to witness volatility due to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The government reiterated that sufficient arrangements are in place to avoid shortages and maintain normal distribution across the country.

Government Assures Stable Supply of Essential Commodities

Following the review meeting, Rajnath Singh said the administration under Prime Minister Narendra Modi is continuously monitoring the situation and taking necessary measures to ensure smooth supplies of essential goods. In a message shared on social media platform X, the minister appealed to citizens not to panic, adding that authorities are actively working to prevent any interruption in supply chains.

Officials stated that the government remains in close coordination with oil marketing companies and refinery operators to ensure that transportation and distribution networks continue functioning without disruption.

Petrol and Diesel Stocks Remain Sufficient

According to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, retail prices of petrol and diesel have not been revised despite the recent surge in global crude oil rates. The ministry also confirmed that adequate fuel inventories are available at filling stations operated by public sector companies such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited.

The statement noted that domestic refineries are operating at elevated production levels while maintaining sufficient crude reserves. Authorities said these steps are aimed at protecting consumers from any immediate impact of international market fluctuations.

LPG Distribution Continues Without Disruption

The ministry further said that cooking gas supplies remain stable across the country. Public sector oil firms are currently delivering nearly 50 lakh domestic LPG cylinders daily to meet household demand.

Despite challenges linked to the Middle East situation, no reports of supply shortages or dry-outs have emerged from LPG distributorships. Officials added that online booking systems have become increasingly efficient, with nearly all LPG bookings now being processed digitally.

To strengthen transparency and reduce the possibility of diversion, around 95 percent of LPG deliveries are now linked to authentication codes sent directly to consumers’ registered mobile numbers.

Focus on Affordable Cylinders for Migrant Workers

Oil companies are also continuing the sale of smaller 5 kg LPG cylinders, which are widely used by migrant workers and low-income households. Since early April, more than 10,700 awareness camps have been organised to encourage adoption of these smaller cylinders and explain their availability.

Officials said the initiative is intended to improve accessibility to clean cooking fuel among economically weaker sections and mobile workers living away from their hometowns.

Expansion of Piped Natural Gas Network

The government also shared updates on the expansion of piped natural gas infrastructure. Around 6.5 lakh PNG connections have already been activated, while infrastructure for an additional 2.66 lakh households has been completed.

This brings the total number of ready connections to more than 9 lakh. In addition, over 7 lakh consumers have reportedly registered for new piped gas services, indicating growing demand for cleaner domestic energy solutions.

Raids Intensified Against Black Marketing

Authorities said enforcement agencies have stepped up action against hoarding and illegal sale of LPG cylinders. More than 2,000 inspections and raids are reportedly being conducted every day across various parts of the country.

Public sector oil companies have also increased surprise checks at LPG agencies. Penalties have been imposed on hundreds of distributorships for irregularities, while several agencies have been suspended over violations linked to supply practices.
