TrinamoolCongress – Sovandeb Chattopadhyay Emerges as Key Opposition Voice in Bengal
TrinamoolCongress – The Trinamool Congress has turned to veteran politician Sovandeb Chattopadhyay at a time when the party is facing intense political pressure following its recent electoral defeat in West Bengal. His appointment as the Leader of the Opposition in the state Assembly has drawn attention across political circles, with many within the party viewing the move as an attempt to restore credibility and organisational balance.

Veteran Leader Takes Centre Stage
Sovandeb Chattopadhyay, one of the oldest and most experienced figures in the Trinamool Congress, has long been regarded as a loyal associate of Mamata Banerjee. His political journey with the party stretches back to its formation in 1998, when he left the Congress to support Banerjee’s newly launched regional platform.
Now 82 years old, Chattopadhyay’s elevation comes at a crucial moment for the party, which is trying to recover from a major electoral setback. Political observers believe his clean public image and extensive grassroots experience make him a stabilising presence inside the organisation.
Electoral Defeat Sparks Internal Reflection
The Trinamool Congress suffered a difficult Assembly election result, forcing the party leadership to reassess its political strategy. Mamata Banerjee’s loss in the Bhabanipur constituency triggered significant changes in the party’s legislative structure and prompted discussions over leadership responsibilities.
Several party insiders have reportedly questioned the organisational approach adopted before the elections. At the same time, criticism has also emerged regarding the increasing influence of younger leadership within the party, particularly surrounding the role of Abhishek Banerjee.
Despite these tensions, Mamata Banerjee has once again taken direct control of the party’s affairs as the organisation prepares for future political battles in the state.
Trusted Loyalists Return to Key Roles
The reshaped Opposition team in the West Bengal Assembly reflects Mamata Banerjee’s preference for experienced and trusted leaders. Alongside Chattopadhyay, senior party figures close to the Trinamool chief have been assigned major responsibilities.
Nayna Bandyopadhyay, who secured victory from Chowringhee, has been appointed Deputy Leader of the Opposition. Another senior MLA, Asima Patra, who won from Dhanekhali, has also been given a deputy leadership role.
With 80 legislators in the 294-member Assembly, the Trinamool Congress now functions as the principal Opposition force in the state legislature.
Long Political Career and Organisational Influence
Chattopadhyay has held several important positions during his political career, including Minister for Power and Non-Conventional Energy, Chief Whip and Deputy Leader of the House. However, colleagues often describe him as a leader more focused on organisational work than public visibility.
Over the decades, he has represented multiple constituencies, including Baruipur, Rashbehari, Bhabanipur, Khardaha and Ballygunge. In 2021, he vacated the Bhabanipur seat to enable Mamata Banerjee’s return to the Assembly after her defeat in Nandigram. He later won the Khardaha bypoll before securing victory from Ballygunge in the latest election.
Beyond electoral politics, he has also maintained close ties with labour organisations and transport unions. He founded the party’s labour wing and remained actively associated with workers’ rights movements in Kolkata.
Debate Over Age and Leadership Continues
Discussions regarding generational transition within the Trinamool Congress have intensified over the past few years. Ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, reports suggested that Abhishek Banerjee had proposed an informal retirement benchmark for senior leaders above the age of 75.
However, several veteran politicians continued to receive party backing, reflecting Mamata Banerjee’s preference for balancing experience with younger leadership. Chattopadhyay’s latest appointment is now being viewed as a sign that senior figures still hold considerable importance within the party structure.
Even at an advanced age, the veteran leader is known for maintaining an active lifestyle. A former college boxer, he continues to engage regularly with grassroots workers and party supporters.
