Diplomacy – Trump Signals Hope for Wider Russia-Ukraine Peace Efforts

Diplomacy –  US President Donald Trump on Friday said he hopes the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict could soon move toward a larger resolution while highlighting what he described as several international disputes settled during his time in office. Speaking before leaving the White House for an event in Virginia, Trump said he would like the Russia-Ukraine conflict to become the “tenth” major conflict resolved under his leadership.

Trump told reporters that bringing an end to the war remains one of his key international priorities. He said the humanitarian impact of the conflict has been severe and stressed that efforts are continuing to reduce violence between both countries. According to Trump, even a short pause in military action could help create momentum for broader peace negotiations.

Temporary Ceasefire Announced for Victory Day Period

Earlier in the day, Trump announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine scheduled from May 9 to May 11. The pause in fighting coincides with Russia’s annual Victory Day commemorations marking the Soviet Union’s role in World War II. Trump stated that both Russia and Ukraine were important contributors during the war and said the timing could help encourage cooperation.

In a message shared on Truth Social, Trump said the agreement would involve a suspension of military operations during the three-day period. He added that the proposal was accepted by both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy after direct discussions.

Trump Pushes for Longer Halt in Fighting

While discussing the temporary truce, Trump expressed support for extending the ceasefire beyond the initial three days. He said a longer pause could create better conditions for diplomatic negotiations and reduce further casualties in the conflict zone.

The US President also described the Russia-Ukraine war as one of the deadliest global conflicts in recent decades. During his remarks, he claimed large numbers of soldiers continue to die each month, though he did not provide official evidence or supporting figures for the statement.

Prisoner Exchange Included in Agreement

Trump confirmed that the ceasefire arrangement would also include a major prisoner exchange between the two countries. According to his statement, Russia and Ukraine are expected to swap 1,000 prisoners each during the temporary halt in fighting.

He thanked both Putin and Zelenskyy for agreeing to the proposal and said the development could become an important step toward reducing tensions. Trump further noted that negotiations aimed at achieving a permanent settlement are still ongoing.

Conflict Continues Into Fifth Year

The Russia-Ukraine war entered its fifth year in February 2026 after Russia launched its large-scale invasion in 2022. Since then, the conflict has led to heavy military and civilian losses, displacement of millions of people, and significant economic disruption across the region. International diplomatic efforts have repeatedly attempted to secure lasting peace, though previous ceasefire attempts have faced challenges.

Trump said discussions involving both sides are continuing and suggested negotiators are making gradual progress toward a broader agreement. He described the war as the largest military conflict in Europe since World War II and said recent diplomatic contacts have moved the process “closer and closer” to a possible breakthrough.
