AI Security – Republican Senator Urges Stronger US Push Against Chinese AI Expansion
AI Security -Growing concern over the use of Chinese artificial intelligence models by American businesses has prompted renewed calls for stricter safeguards, with a senior Republican lawmaker urging the Trump administration to strengthen domestic AI capabilities while reducing dependence on foreign-developed systems.
Senator Calls for a Broader AI Strategy
Republican Senator Tom Cotton of Arkansas has appealed to the Trump administration to adopt a comprehensive strategy aimed at limiting China’s expanding role in the global artificial intelligence industry. In a letter addressed to Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, the senator argued that the United States should reinforce its leadership in AI by tightening technology controls, encouraging wider adoption of American-developed models, and reducing the presence of Chinese AI systems in critical sectors.
Cotton said maintaining an advantage in advanced AI research alone would not be enough. According to him, the United States must also ensure that businesses, researchers, educational institutions, and international partners increasingly rely on American AI platforms so that global technology standards continue to be shaped by the country.
Concerns Over Growing Use of Chinese AI Models
The Arkansas senator expressed concern that an increasing number of American companies are incorporating Chinese-developed AI models into their products and services. He warned that this trend could create long-term national security challenges if foreign technology becomes deeply integrated into critical software and digital infrastructure.
Cotton referred to industry estimates suggesting that a significant share of US startups have adopted Chinese AI models while building applications. He also highlighted examples of commercial products using Chinese-developed technology, arguing that the growing acceptance of these systems deserves closer attention from policymakers.
National Security Risks Highlighted
In his letter, Cotton raised concerns that open-weight AI models originating from China could present cybersecurity risks that may not be fully identified through existing review processes. He argued that even detailed technical examinations may not guarantee the complete detection of hidden vulnerabilities or security weaknesses.
The senator stressed that companies working with the US government should avoid relying on AI technologies that could expose sensitive operations to unnecessary risks. He maintained that protecting national security should take priority over potential commercial advantages associated with lower-cost foreign AI solutions.
Proposal for Stronger Government Restrictions
Among the measures outlined in the letter, Cotton recommended preserving strict export controls on advanced computing hardware and semiconductor manufacturing equipment to prevent strategic technologies from strengthening China’s AI industry.
He also called for expanding restrictions beyond previously targeted Chinese AI models by introducing a government-wide ban on additional Chinese systems used by federal contractors. Cotton noted that certain government departments have already prohibited access to some Chinese AI platforms internally and suggested extending those policies across the federal contracting network.
According to the senator, such action would reduce security risks while encouraging businesses serving government agencies to shift toward American-developed AI alternatives.
Support for Domestic AI Innovation
Alongside tighter restrictions, Cotton urged the administration to strengthen the US artificial intelligence ecosystem by supporting both advanced frontier models and more affordable commercial AI products. He argued that offering a wide range of reliable American AI solutions would improve the country’s competitiveness in domestic and international markets.
The senator said customers around the world would be more likely to choose American AI systems if they provide strong performance, competitive pricing, and trusted security standards. In his view, this approach would help the United States expand its influence as AI adoption continues to accelerate globally.

Concluding his recommendations, Cotton emphasized that the United States should build an AI environment capable of serving multiple industries, from defence and critical infrastructure to scientific research, business operations, and consumer applications.
He praised the administration’s ongoing efforts in artificial intelligence policy and said timely action could preserve America’s technological edge. Cotton argued that combining innovation, security safeguards, and broader international adoption of US-developed AI models would strengthen the country’s long-term position in the rapidly evolving global AI landscape.
