Municipal Administration and Urban Development Minister Ponguru Narayana conducted a detailed review meeting on Tuesday at the APCRDA building to assess the progress of programmes being implemented under the Mission for Elimination of Poverty in Municipal Areas (MEPMA). Senior officials, including MEPMA Mission Director Vakati Karuna, participated in the discussions focused on improving the economic condition of women associated with Self-Help Groups across the state.

Focus on Increasing Household Income

During the meeting, the Minister instructed officials to accelerate livelihood-related activities and develop stronger support systems for SHG members. The primary objective of the review was to identify ways to raise per capita income among women participating in urban self-help initiatives.

Officials examined several ongoing programmes linked to financial management, digital bookkeeping, and livelihood planning. These included Mobile Book Keeping, Mana Dabbulu Mana Lekkalu, the Enterprise and Marketing Capacity Programme (EMCP), and the Annual Livelihood Action Plan. The review also covered the performance of community-based business models and strategies to expand market access for SHG-made products.

Swayam Brand Receives Major Attention

A major part of the discussion centred on the Swayam brand initiative, which was introduced earlier by the Chief Minister during International Women’s Day celebrations. The programme was designed to create a unified identity for products manufactured by women Self-Help Groups in Andhra Pradesh.

Mission Director Vakati Karuna presented detailed plans related to product development and branding. The presentation highlighted measures aimed at ensuring better product quality, modern packaging standards, attractive labelling, and stronger market visibility. Officials explained that creating a consistent identity under the Swayam brand would help SHG products compete more effectively in both local and wider commercial markets.

Several product samples prepared under standardised models were displayed during the review meeting. These models were designed to reflect the Andhra Pradesh brand image while maintaining uniform quality and packaging standards. Officials informed the Minister that nearly 10 to 15 product categories had already been prepared as part of the pilot effort.

Marketing Expansion Through Online and Offline Platforms

The government is planning a broader marketing strategy to improve the commercial reach of products manufactured by women groups. According to officials, the Swayam initiative will rely on both digital and physical sales channels to increase visibility and customer access.

E-commerce platforms are expected to play an important role in the expansion strategy. At the same time, offline retail outlets are also being planned to create direct market opportunities for SHG members. Officials believe this dual approach can help women entrepreneurs access larger consumer markets and generate more stable earnings.

The Minister stressed the importance of ensuring long-term sustainability for women-led enterprises rather than limiting support to short-term assistance programmes. He also asked departments to closely monitor implementation and provide timely guidance to SHG members involved in production and marketing activities.

Gradual Statewide Expansion Planned

Officials stated that the Swayam branding initiative will eventually be extended to Self-Help Groups throughout Andhra Pradesh. The aim is to bring more women under organised livelihood networks while creating dependable income sources for urban poor families.

The administration believes that standardisation and branding can significantly improve the commercial value of SHG products. By combining quality control, better packaging, and stronger promotion, the government hopes to position women-led enterprises as reliable contributors to the state economy.

The review meeting concluded with directions to intensify coordination among departments and ensure that livelihood programmes continue to deliver measurable economic benefits to women across urban areas of Andhra Pradesh.
