Crime – Rahul Gandhi Raises Concerns Over Ghazipur Case Handling
Crime – Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Saturday voiced sharp criticism of the Uttar Pradesh administration following a reported rape and murder case in Ghazipur, questioning the state’s ability to ensure women’s safety and deliver justice.

Allegations of Administrative Lapses
In a message shared on social media platform X, Gandhi highlighted the case of a young girl belonging to the Vishwakarma community. He alleged that the victim’s family encountered resistance and intimidation while attempting to lodge a First Information Report (FIR). According to him, such difficulties point to deeper systemic shortcomings in law enforcement.
Gandhi also drew parallels with previous high-profile cases, including incidents in Hathras, Kathua, and Unnao. He argued that these cases reflect a recurring pattern, particularly affecting women from marginalised and economically weaker sections of society.
Claims of Social and Institutional Bias
The Congress leader further claimed that victims in such cases are frequently from Dalit, backward, tribal, or underprivileged communities, while those accused often benefit from protection or influence. He suggested that this imbalance raises serious questions about fairness and accountability within the system.
He also criticised what he described as a lack of response from those in positions of authority. Gandhi questioned whether families should have to struggle merely to register complaints, calling it a failure of governance and basic justice mechanisms.
Demand for Accountability and Investigation
Calling for immediate action, Gandhi urged authorities to take strict measures against any police personnel found negligent. He also stressed the need to ensure safety for the victim’s family and called for a high-level, impartial investigation into the case.
Addressing both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, he raised concerns about the overall security environment for women, asking why such incidents continue to occur despite repeated assurances.
Priyanka Gandhi Joins Criticism
Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also commented on the issue, echoing similar concerns. She alleged that incidents of violence against women in the state are increasing and criticised the administration for what she described as inadequate action.
Referring specifically to the Ghazipur case, she claimed that authorities often appear to favour the accused rather than prioritising the needs and rights of victims and their families.
Police Response and Ongoing Probe
According to official statements, the minor girl had gone missing from a village in Ghazipur on April 14. Her body was discovered the following morning near a bridge over the Ganga River. Police confirmed that an FIR has been registered and that the primary suspect has been arrested based on information provided by the victim’s family.
Additional Director General of Police for the Varanasi Zone, Piyush Mordia, stated that the investigation is actively underway. Authorities are examining all available evidence and angles to establish the sequence of events and ensure appropriate legal action.
Focus on Justice and Safety Measures
The case has once again brought attention to issues surrounding women’s safety, access to justice, and the functioning of law enforcement systems. Political leaders and officials continue to exchange views on the matter, while the investigation proceeds.
Observers note that the outcome of the probe and subsequent legal proceedings will be closely watched, as they may influence public confidence in institutional responses to such serious crimes.
