DelhiElections – BJP and Congress File Nominations as AAP Opts Out
DelhiElections – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Indian National Congress on Thursday formally submitted their nominations for key leadership positions in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) stayed away from the mayoral race.

BJP and Congress Announce Candidates
The BJP has nominated Parvesh Wahi for the post of Mayor and Monika Pant for Deputy Mayor. Wahi, who represents Ward 53 in Rohini-East and has previously served as Leader of the House, completed his nomination process on April 23, the final day for filing papers. Pant, a councillor from Ward 206 in Anand Vihar, also submitted her candidacy for the deputy position.
The Congress has fielded Zarif, a councillor from Ward 234, as its mayoral candidate. For the Deputy Mayor’s role, the party has nominated Rajesh Kumar Gupta from Ward 39. Both candidates completed their filings on schedule, signaling the party’s intent to stay actively engaged in the civic leadership contest.
AAP Steps Back from Mayoral Contest
In a notable development, the Aam Aadmi Party chose not to nominate candidates for either Mayor or Deputy Mayor. Party representatives stated that this decision was aimed at allowing the BJP a clear opportunity to run the civic body and be fully accountable for its performance.
This move marks a shift in strategy, as AAP has previously played an active role in MCD leadership contests. The party indicated that it would continue to raise civic concerns through other channels despite not contesting these positions.
Standing Committee Nominations Filed
Alongside the mayoral nominations, candidates for vacant positions in the Standing Committee were also announced. The BJP nominated Jai Bhagwan Yadav from Ward 27 in Begampur and Manish Chaddha from Ward 82. Meanwhile, AAP’s Jalaj Kumar, representing Ward 55, filed his nomination for one of the committee seats.
The Standing Committee plays a critical role in financial and administrative decisions within the MCD, making these elections significant for the functioning of the civic body.
Key Issues Highlighted by Candidates
After filing his nomination, Parvesh Wahi outlined his priorities, focusing on improving sanitation and strengthening civic infrastructure across Delhi. He emphasized the need for efficient waste management systems and better urban services to address residents’ concerns.
These issues have remained central to civic discussions in Delhi, especially with recurring challenges related to waste disposal, road maintenance, and drainage systems.
Election Schedule and Voting Details
The elections for Mayor and Deputy Mayor are scheduled to take place during the MCD House meeting on April 29. The electoral college consists of 273 members, and a candidate must secure at least 137 votes to win.
Given the current composition of the House, the outcome will depend on party alignments and voting strategies during the session.
AAP Reappoints Leader of Opposition
Separately, the Aam Aadmi Party has reappointed Ankush Narang as the Leader of Opposition in the MCD. Narang said the role reflects public trust and assured that he would continue to raise key civic issues.
He noted that over the past year, the House had functioned more smoothly with AAP in opposition compared to earlier periods marked by disruptions. Narang highlighted that the party consistently brought attention to concerns such as monsoon preparedness, waterlogging, pollution, and the spread of vector-borne diseases.
He also criticized the BJP, alleging that it had not met expectations in managing the municipal body effectively.
Focus on Governance Ahead
With the elections approaching, attention is now on how the new leadership will address long-standing civic challenges. Issues related to sanitation, infrastructure, and public health remain at the forefront of Delhi’s urban agenda, and the upcoming vote will shape the direction of governance in the municipal corporation.
