Education – Delhi University SOL Teachers Raise Concerns Over Governance Practices
Education – A group of faculty members at the School of Open Learning (SOL), University of Delhi, has formally appealed to the Vice Chancellor, raising serious concerns about workplace conditions and administrative decision-making within the institution. In their communication, the teachers have sought immediate intervention, citing what they describe as a troubling pattern of actions affecting academic staff.

Faculty Allege Administrative Pressure and Unfair Actions
In their representation, the teachers outlined allegations against the SOL leadership, particularly focusing on decisions they believe have created an environment of undue pressure. According to the letter, four faculty members experienced an extension of their probation period under circumstances the signatories consider unjustified. This was followed by the issuance of show-cause notices, prompting further unease among staff.
The teachers named in the matter include Dr. Saripalli V. Ravikiran, Dr. Ravinder Pratap Singh, Dr. Monika Jaiswal, and Dr. Jahidul Deewan. The signatories argue that these actions reflect a broader pattern of administrative overreach rather than isolated decisions.
Concerns Raised in Academic Council Meeting
The issue was also brought up during a recent Academic Council meeting held on April 15. Faculty members claim that excerpts from Self Learning Material (SLM) were selectively presented during the discussion. According to them, this selective referencing did not provide a complete picture of the situation and may have contributed to decisions taken against the concerned teachers.
They further noted that important context was missing, including the fact that some faculty members had been assigned to review academic material outside their areas of linguistic or subject expertise. This, they argue, raises questions about the processes followed in preparing and evaluating course content.
Questions Over Responsibility for Study Material
Another point highlighted in the letter relates to authorship and accountability for the study materials under scrutiny. The teachers stated that none of the faculty members facing disciplinary measures had actually written the SLM content in question. Instead, they pointed to what they described as systemic shortcomings in how the material was developed and reviewed.
The signatories also challenged claims regarding alleged discrepancies in course content related to Dr. B.R. Ambedkar. They maintained that the syllabus adequately addresses themes such as caste and untouchability, and argued that references had been taken out of context during the evaluation process.
Atmosphere of Anxiety and Communication Concerns
Beyond specific administrative actions, the teachers expressed concern about the broader working environment at SOL. They described a growing sense of unease among staff, citing what they perceive as increased monitoring and a lack of open communication.
Particular objection was raised over the circulation of Central Civil Services rules in an official WhatsApp group. The faculty members claimed that these rules were presented in a manner that may not accurately reflect their applicability to university staff, leading to confusion and apprehension.
They also questioned what they termed a disproportionate escalation of the situation, including references to potential legal or criminal proceedings. Such developments, they argue, contribute to a climate of uncertainty rather than constructive resolution.
Appeal for Institutional Reforms and Fair Treatment
In conclusion, the teachers have urged the university administration to take corrective steps. Their demands include the withdrawal of actions against the affected faculty members, confirmation of their appointments, and the release of withheld increments.
They have also called for measures to ensure transparency in administrative processes, protection of academic independence, and stronger accountability within the institution. The signatories emphasized that addressing these concerns is essential for maintaining trust and ensuring a healthy academic environment.
The matter now awaits a response from the Vice Chancellor, as faculty members hope for a resolution that balances administrative authority with academic fairness.
