Weather – Delhi Records Over 42°C as Heatwave Conditions Loom

Weather –  Delhi experienced intense heat on Wednesday, with temperatures soaring past the 42°C mark in several parts of the city. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that the situation is likely to worsen, with heatwave conditions expected to begin from April 24 and persist in the following days.

Temperatures Climb Above Seasonal Average

Data collected from multiple weather stations across the capital revealed a consistent rise in daytime temperatures. The Ridge area reported the highest maximum temperature at 42.1°C, significantly above the seasonal average by nearly 3.7 degrees. Ayanagar followed closely with 41.4°C, also registering a notable deviation from normal levels.

Safdarjung, considered the city’s primary weather monitoring station, recorded a maximum temperature of 40.7°C, about three degrees higher than usual. Similarly, Lodi Road and Palam stations also saw elevated readings, with temperatures crossing the 40°C threshold. These figures highlight a steady upward trend, with a noticeable increase of around 1.6°C to 1.9°C in just 24 hours across various locations.

Night Temperatures Offer Little Relief

While daytime heat remained the primary concern, nighttime temperatures also stayed relatively high, offering limited respite to residents. Palam recorded the highest minimum temperature at 24.6°C, followed by Ayanagar at 23.5°C. Both readings were above normal levels, indicating sustained warmth even after sunset.

The Ridge station reported a minimum temperature slightly above average, while Safdarjung and Lodi Road recorded marginally lower-than-normal nighttime temperatures. Despite minor variations, the overall pattern suggests that the city is experiencing consistently warm conditions both day and night.

Heatwave Conditions Expected to Intensify

The IMD has forecast predominantly clear skies for April 23, a factor that typically contributes to further heating during the day. Maximum temperatures are expected to remain around 42°C, with projections indicating a rise to nearly 43°C in the coming days.

From April 24 onward, official heatwave conditions are likely to set in. Such conditions are generally declared when temperatures significantly exceed normal levels over consecutive days. The expected rise could increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children, and outdoor workers.

Air Quality Remains a Concern

Alongside rising temperatures, Delhi’s air quality continues to be a concern. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded at 216, placing it in the ‘poor’ category as per Central Pollution Control Board standards. This level of air pollution can have adverse health effects, especially for individuals with respiratory conditions.

According to official classifications, AQI values between 201 and 300 fall under the ‘poor’ category, indicating reduced air quality that may cause discomfort to many people. With hot and dry conditions prevailing, pollutants tend to remain suspended in the air, further worsening the situation.

Outlook for the Coming Days

Weather experts suggest that the combination of clear skies and dry winds will continue to push temperatures upward in the short term. Residents are advised to take precautions, including staying hydrated, avoiding direct sunlight during peak hours, and monitoring official weather updates.

As summer intensifies earlier than usual, authorities may also consider issuing advisories to minimize health risks. The coming days will be crucial in determining how severe the heatwave becomes and how long it persists.
