Heatwave – Delhi Braces for Three Days of Rising Temperatures and Alerts
Heatwave – New Delhi is preparing for a significant rise in temperatures over the next few days, with forecasts indicating heatwave-like conditions from Wednesday through Friday. The mercury is expected to climb close to 44 degrees Celsius in several parts of the national capital, prompting authorities to issue a yellow alert as a precautionary measure.

Temperatures Already Above Seasonal Levels
Even before the anticipated spike, the city has been experiencing warmer-than-usual days. On Tuesday, despite occasional gusty winds that offered brief relief, the maximum temperature reached 38.8 degrees Celsius. This figure was slightly higher than the seasonal average. The minimum temperature settled at 20.5 degrees Celsius and is projected to increase steadily, possibly reaching around 26 degrees Celsius by April 25.
Monitoring Stations Show Varied Trends
Weather data from different parts of the city reflects a consistent warming trend. The Safdarjung observatory, considered the base station for Delhi’s weather readings, recorded a maximum temperature of 38.8 degrees Celsius, marginally above normal levels.
At Palam, the maximum temperature stood at 38.6 degrees Celsius, which falls within the typical range for this time of year. However, Lodhi Road reported a slightly higher reading of 39.0 degrees Celsius, indicating a noticeable deviation from the average.
Ridge and Ayanagar Among the Hottest Areas
The Ridge area recorded the highest temperature in the city, with the mercury rising to 40.2 degrees Celsius. This was nearly two degrees above the normal mark, making it the hottest location in Delhi for the day. Ayanagar also experienced elevated temperatures, registering a maximum of 39.8 degrees Celsius, which is above the usual average.
These figures suggest that certain pockets of the city are already experiencing conditions close to heatwave thresholds, even before an official declaration has been made.
Cooler Nights Still Offer Temporary Relief
While daytime temperatures are rising, nighttime conditions remain relatively moderate for now. Safdarjung recorded a minimum temperature of 20.5 degrees Celsius, which is slightly below normal. Similarly, Palam reported a minimum of 22.2 degrees Celsius, also lower than expected for this period.
Lodhi Road experienced a cooler night, with temperatures dropping to 18.8 degrees Celsius, significantly below the seasonal average. The Ridge station recorded a minimum of 22.3 degrees Celsius, while Ayanagar logged 21.2 degrees Celsius, both slightly below normal levels.
First Heatwave Spell of the Season Likely
Despite the increasing heat, Delhi has not yet officially recorded a heatwave this season. However, with temperatures expected to rise sharply in the coming days, the first confirmed heatwave spell of the year appears imminent.
Authorities have issued a yellow alert to prepare residents for the impact of extreme heat. This includes advising people to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged exposure to the sun during peak hours, and take necessary precautions, especially for vulnerable groups such as children and the elderly.
Authorities on Alert as Heat Intensifies
Civic agencies and weather officials are closely monitoring the situation as temperatures continue to climb. Measures are being reviewed to manage the effects of prolonged heat, including ensuring water availability and public awareness campaigns.
As Delhi moves into a hotter phase, residents are advised to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines to cope with the rising temperatures.
