WarMedics –  In a modest field hospital near Ukraine’s eastern battle lines, a husband-and-wife medical team works with quiet precision to save lives under constant pressure. Their routine, built through months of shared experience, reflects both professional discipline and a deep personal bond shaped by war.

A Partnership Forged in Crisis

Anastasia Podobailo and Mykola Yasinenko serve together as combat medics in the Donetsk region, where fighting remains intense. Their coordination inside the surgical unit is seamless, requiring few words. Years of working side by side have helped them anticipate each other’s actions, an advantage in high-pressure situations where seconds matter.

Podobailo, 27, brings a calm and reassuring presence to wounded soldiers, often easing their distress during treatment. Yasinenko, 31, is more reserved, focusing on technical precision and monitoring critical procedures. Together, their contrasting personalities create a balanced and effective team.

From Meeting to Marriage During Wartime

The couple met in 2021, just before the conflict escalated dramatically. Yasinenko, originally from Mariupol, had been deployed to the same base where Podobailo was stationed. Their relationship developed quickly, shaped by the realities of military life.

According to Yasinenko, war leaves little room for pretense. The circumstances forced them to understand each other’s true selves early on, strengthening their connection. Over time, their personal and professional lives became closely intertwined.

Life at the Stabilisation Point

Their current posting places them at a stabilisation unit, where injured soldiers receive urgent care before being transferred elsewhere. The couple shares a small living space near the surgical area with fellow medics.

Despite the harsh environment, Podobailo has added personal touches to their sleeping quarters, decorating her bunk with soft toys and posters. Yasinenko sleeps on the lower bunk, close enough to remain connected even during brief moments of rest.

Their schedule involves several days of intense work followed by short breaks. However, even during rest periods, they remain on alert, ready to respond if new attacks occur. Yasinenko admits that constant vigilance has become part of his daily mindset.

Coping with Emotional Strain

The psychological toll of their work is significant. Both have witnessed severe injuries and heard final messages from soldiers who did not survive. These experiences leave lasting emotional marks.

To address this burden, they participated in a structured retreat program in western Ukraine designed for military medics. The initiative provided a rare opportunity to step away from the frontlines, reflect, and regain mental balance.

During the retreat, they joined fellow medics in group activities and shared experiences. Podobailo described the environment as comforting, surrounded by people who understand the unique challenges of their role.

Personal Loss and Displacement

The war has also reshaped their personal histories. Yasinenko’s hometown is now under Russian control, while areas significant to their relationship have also been captured. Places tied to their memories, including where they first met and shared important milestones, are no longer accessible.

Podobailo reflects on this loss with a sense of quiet determination. She worries that over time, memories may fade without the ability to revisit those locations. Despite this, she remains committed to preserving those moments mentally.

Looking Ahead Amid Uncertainty

While the future remains uncertain, the couple continues to focus on their work and each other. Their shared experiences have created a strong foundation, allowing them to endure both professional and personal challenges.

They hope that one day they will be able to tell their story to future generations, even if they cannot physically return to the places that shaped their journey. For now, their priority remains clear: saving lives while navigating the realities of war together.
