Heatwave – Delhi Temperatures Rise Sharply, Hotter Days Expected Ahead

Heatwave- Delhi experienced a noticeable surge in temperatures on Wednesday, with the maximum temperature climbing to 39.2 degrees Celsius. According to the India Meteorological Department, this upward trend is likely to continue, with temperatures expected to reach as high as 42 degrees Celsius in the coming days. The steady rise has already begun affecting daily life in the national capital, signaling the early arrival of intense summer conditions.

Temperatures Cross Seasonal Averages Across Key Stations

Data recorded from various monitoring stations showed that temperatures were consistently above normal levels. The Ridge station reported the highest maximum temperature at 40.7 degrees Celsius, significantly exceeding the seasonal average. Safdarjung, which serves as the city’s primary weather station, recorded 39.2 degrees Celsius—around 3 degrees higher than usual for this time of year.

Other stations also reflected similar conditions. Lodhi Road and Ayanagar both registered maximum temperatures of 39.0 degrees Celsius, while Palam recorded a slightly lower reading of 38.3 degrees Celsius. Despite these variations, the overall pattern indicates a uniform rise in daytime temperatures across the capital.

Forecast Suggests Further Increase in Coming Days

Weather officials have indicated that the rising trend is unlikely to slow down immediately. Starting Thursday, several stations, including Safdarjung, are expected to record temperatures around or above the 40-degree mark. Over the next few days, the maximum temperature is likely to hover between 40 and 41 degrees Celsius, with the possibility of touching 42 degrees Celsius under clear sky conditions.

Meteorologists attribute this increase to dry winds and clear skies, which allow more solar radiation to heat the surface. Such conditions are typical during the transition from spring to peak summer but appear to have intensified earlier this year.

Night Temperatures Also Showing Upward Trend

While daytime heat has become more intense, nights are also gradually becoming warmer. Minimum temperatures, which were previously below normal, are now expected to rise to around 21 degrees Celsius. This shift could reduce the relief usually experienced after sunset, making conditions more uncomfortable for residents.

Earlier observations showed that minimum temperatures were still slightly below average at most stations. Safdarjung recorded a minimum of 19.4 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road reported 18.3 degrees Celsius. Ridge and Ayanagar also recorded temperatures below 20 degrees Celsius. However, this pattern is expected to change as the heat strengthens.

Air Quality Deteriorates Alongside Rising Heat

Along with increasing temperatures, Delhi’s air quality has also worsened. The Air Quality Index (AQI) reached 204, placing it in the ‘poor’ category. Experts note that stagnant air conditions and rising temperatures can contribute to the accumulation of pollutants, reducing overall air quality.

The combination of high temperatures and deteriorating air conditions can pose health risks, especially for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory issues. Authorities often advise limiting outdoor activities during peak afternoon hours under such conditions.

Unusual Weather Patterns Observed This Season

Weather experts have pointed out that the patterns seen over the past month and into mid-April have been somewhat unusual. The rapid rise in temperatures and fluctuating minimum readings suggest a shift from typical seasonal behavior. While such variations are not unprecedented, their timing and intensity have drawn attention.

As Delhi moves further into the summer season, residents can expect continued heat and changing environmental conditions. Authorities and meteorologists continue to monitor the situation closely, urging people to stay informed and take necessary precautions.
