FireIncident – Three Killed After Midnight Blaze in Rohini Huts Area

FireIncident –  A tragic fire in northwest Delhi’s Rohini area claimed the lives of three members of a young family early Wednesday morning, raising fresh concerns about safety in informal settlements. According to officials, the blaze broke out in a cluster of temporary huts in Budh Vihar, leaving little time for those inside to react.

Fire Breaks Out in Early Hours

Emergency services received a distress call at around 1:25 am, prompting the dispatch of multiple fire engines to the location. Authorities later confirmed that at least four makeshift huts, primarily occupied by rag-pickers, were engulfed in flames. These residents reportedly earned their livelihood by collecting scrap materials from nearby localities.

Police officials stated that the fire is believed to have started around 12:45 am, though the exact cause remains unknown. The presence of highly flammable scrap materials, along with the fragile construction of the huts, contributed to the rapid spread of the flames.

Victims Trapped Inside Locked Shelter

While five individuals managed to escape the inferno in time, three others were unable to get out. The deceased have been identified as Mosibur Dastagir, aged 23, his 19-year-old wife Monara Sekh, and their two-year-old daughter. According to investigators, the family was trapped inside a hut that had been locked from within.

Firefighters eventually brought the blaze under control, but not before the tragic loss of life. Teams from forensic and crime departments later visited the site to begin a detailed examination.

Desperate Attempts to Escape

Eyewitness accounts suggest the family made frantic efforts to escape. A neighbor reported that the couple attempted to save their child by pushing her toward safety. However, the situation worsened when part of the burning structure collapsed.

It was also revealed that the door had been locked due to frequent theft incidents in the area. In the chaos, the man reportedly struggled to find the key. He then tried to break open the lock using a knife, but the fire intensified quickly, and the collapsing roof cut off any chance of escape.

Investigation Underway

Police have registered a case and initiated an investigation into the incident. Authorities are currently examining CCTV footage from nearby cameras to determine whether the fire was accidental or triggered by any external factor.

A relative of the victims, Amin Sheikh, stated that residents woke up around 1 am after noticing flames spreading rapidly across the huts. He added that it remains unclear whether the fire started on its own or was deliberately set.

Living Conditions Under Scrutiny

The victims had reportedly been living in the area for nearly five years. The incident has once again drawn attention to the hazardous conditions in which many informal workers reside. The use of scrap materials, lack of proper infrastructure, and absence of fire safety measures significantly increase the risk of such tragedies.

Officials have assured that all aspects, including structural vulnerabilities and possible negligence, will be examined as part of the ongoing probe.
