Governance – The Delhi government has stepped up its focus on improving basic civic services, with Chief Minister Rekha Gupta issuing firm directions to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) to strengthen waste management practices and maintain higher cleanliness standards across the city. The move comes as part of a broader effort to address long-standing concerns related to sanitation and urban infrastructure.
Focus on Modern Waste Processing Facilities
During a recent review meeting on civic operations, the Chief Minister emphasized the need for advanced solutions to manage the city’s growing waste burden. Officials were instructed to ensure timely execution of projects and avoid delays in essential services.
As part of this plan, new waste-to-energy plants equipped with modern technology will be developed at key locations including Ghazipur, Narela, Okhla, and Tekhand. These facilities are expected to play a crucial role in reducing landfill pressure while generating energy from waste, aligning with sustainable urban development goals.
Upgrading Public Sanitation Infrastructure
The meeting also resulted in a decision to revamp a large number of public sanitation units managed by the MCD. Around 1,000 toilet and urinal blocks across the capital are set to undergo redevelopment to improve hygiene standards and accessibility for residents.
Officials indicated that the initiative will focus not only on structural upgrades but also on better maintenance systems to ensure these facilities remain clean and usable over time. The effort is aimed at addressing public complaints about inadequate sanitation in several areas.
Expansion of Bio-Energy Projects
In addition to waste-to-energy plants, the government is planning to expand its bio-energy infrastructure. Three new gobar gas plants will be established in Goyla Dairy, Ghogha, and Ghazipur. These plants will convert organic waste into usable energy, contributing to cleaner waste disposal methods and reducing environmental impact.
Authorities believe that such projects can support both waste reduction and renewable energy generation, particularly in areas with high volumes of organic waste.
Special Clean-Up Drives Along Railway Tracks
Another key directive issued during the review involves targeted cleanliness drives along railway tracks. These areas have often been identified as major dumping zones, leading to environmental and health concerns.
The government has instructed the MCD to conduct dedicated operations to clear garbage from these stretches in a systematic and effective manner. The initiative is expected to improve both sanitation and the overall appearance of these frequently neglected zones.
Strict Monitoring and Accountability Measures
The Chief Minister also stressed the importance of accountability within civic agencies. Officials were warned against lapses in service delivery and were directed to ensure consistent monitoring of sanitation activities across all districts.
