Elections – Voters across Kerala participated in the state Assembly elections on Thursday, with prominent leaders casting their ballots and expressing confidence in their respective parties’ prospects. Among them, Congress Rajya Sabha member Jebi Mather voted at a polling booth in Aluva and voiced strong optimism about the outcome for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF).

UDF Confident of Strong Mandate

Speaking after casting her vote at the Islamic Higher Secondary School polling station, Mather said she believes the electorate has made up its mind in favor of the UDF. According to her, the alliance is poised to secure a significant majority, potentially winning around 100 seats in the 140-member Assembly. Her remarks reflect the confidence within the Congress camp as it seeks to return to power after a decade.

The elections are being held in a single phase, drawing considerable attention due to the competitive nature of the contest. Mather also addressed the ongoing discussion surrounding the Women’s Reservation Bill, reiterating her party’s long-standing concerns. She stated that when the bill was introduced in Parliament, the Congress had raised objections about linking its implementation to delimitation and the census, arguing that such conditions could delay the process.

She emphasized that her party had advocated for immediate implementation, stressing the importance of ensuring women’s participation in governance. According to her, women play a crucial role in shaping the country’s democratic framework and should have equitable representation in legislative bodies.

Several senior political figures were seen at polling stations across the state during the early hours of voting. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan cast his vote in Kannur, while Leader of Opposition V D Satheesan exercised his franchise in Ernakulam.

Kerala Congress president Sunny Joseph also voted in Kannur, and Congress MP Hibi Eden cast his ballot in Kochi. In addition, UDF candidate Ramesh Pisharody voted in Thrippunithura, joining other candidates and leaders participating in the democratic process.
