Violence – Deadly blast and firing intensify unrest across Manipur valley
Violence – Fresh violence has unsettled parts of Manipur after a bomb explosion and a subsequent firing incident left four people dead, including two young children, triggering public anger and protests across the Imphal Valley.

Bomb attack claims lives of children and injures mother
The first incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday in the Moirang Tronglaobi area of Bishnupur district. According to officials, a powerful blast struck a residential area around 1 am, killing a five-year-old boy and a six-month-old infant. Their mother sustained injuries and was rushed to a nearby medical facility for treatment.
The locality lies along the sensitive boundary between Bishnupur, where Meitei communities are dominant, and neighbouring Churachandpur district, which has a significant Kuki population. The location has remained tense in recent months due to recurring ethnic clashes.
Public anger leads to arson and clashes
As word of the tragic incident spread, large groups of residents gathered in protest. Demonstrators reportedly set fire to two oil tankers and a truck, expressing outrage over the attack and demanding swift justice.
The situation escalated further when a crowd moved towards a camp of central security forces. Several vehicles parked inside the premises were set ablaze as tensions spiralled. Security personnel responded by opening fire to disperse the mob, leading to further casualties.
Firing incident adds to death toll
Five individuals were injured during the firing by security forces. Authorities later confirmed that two of them succumbed to their injuries, raising the total number of deaths linked to the day’s violence to four. Several others were treated for minor injuries sustained during the unrest.
The dual incidents — the bomb explosion and the firing — have intensified concerns about law and order in the region, which has already been grappling with prolonged ethnic tensions.
Protests spread across Imphal Valley
In the aftermath, protests erupted in multiple parts of the Imphal Valley. Demonstrators demanded accountability not only for the bomb attack but also for the use of force by security personnel. Protesters called for a transparent investigation and strict action against those responsible.
Authorities remained on high alert as gatherings continued in different districts, with additional security forces deployed to prevent further escalation.
Internet services suspended to curb misinformation
In response to the deteriorating situation, the state government ordered the suspension of internet services for three days across five districts in the Imphal Valley. Officials said the move was aimed at preventing the spread of rumours and inflammatory content that could worsen tensions on the ground.
Such restrictions have been used in the past during periods of unrest in the state, though they often disrupt daily life and communication for residents.
Government orders probe by central agency
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh announced that the investigation into the bomb attack would be handed over to the National Investigation Agency. The decision reflects the seriousness of the incident and the need for a detailed probe into those behind the attack.
The government has assured residents that efforts are underway to restore peace and ensure accountability. However, the latest violence underscores the fragile security situation in Manipur, where sporadic incidents continue to challenge stability.
