EntertainmentIndustry – Assam Strengthens Position as Emerging Concert Tourism Hub
EntertainmentIndustry – Assam is rapidly gaining recognition as one of India’s most promising destinations for large-scale live entertainment, with recent developments highlighting the state’s growing influence in the country’s expanding experience economy. Supported by infrastructure improvements, policy support and collaboration between public and private stakeholders, Assam is increasingly using live events as a tool to boost tourism, employment and local business activity.

Report Highlights Economic Potential
A new report titled “The Assam Blueprint: Turning Live Music Economy into a Tourism Multiplier” has been released through a collaboration involving BookMyShow, the Assam Tourism Development Corporation Ltd. (ATDC) and consulting firm EY-Parthenon. The study examines the broader impact of live entertainment in the state and uses the recent Post Malone concert in Guwahati as a key example of how major events can influence economic activity across multiple sectors.
According to the findings, Assam could generate more than Rs 700 crore in cumulative economic benefits over the next five years if it continues to attract a steady calendar of high-profile events. The report suggests that long-term planning and ecosystem development can help transform live entertainment into a consistent contributor to the state economy.
Post Malone Concert Delivered Wide-Ranging Benefits
The report identifies Post Malone’s debut solo headline concert in India, held in Guwahati, as a significant milestone for the region’s entertainment landscape. Estimates indicate that the event contributed approximately Rs 43 crore in overall economic impact, including around Rs 32 crore in direct spending within Assam and nearly Rs 5 crore in GST collections.
Despite challenges caused by airline disruptions during the event period, close to 20,000 people attended the concert. More than half of those attendees travelled from outside Guwahati, representing over 200 cities and towns across the country.
Tourism and Local Businesses See Strong Gains
The economic influence extended well beyond ticket sales. Visitors spent considerably on accommodation, transportation, food, shopping and other services throughout their stay. The study found that for every Rs 100 spent on concert tickets, attendees spent nearly Rs 899 on related activities and services.
Hospitality businesses experienced notable growth during the event weekend. Hotels reported occupancy increases of around 30%, while transport operators saw ride demand rise by more than 50%. Restaurants, cafes and retail establishments also benefited from a significant increase in customer footfall and spending.
Concerts Encouraging Regional Travel
The event also encouraged visitors to explore other parts of Assam, contributing to broader tourism activity. Popular destinations such as Kaziranga National Park, Majuli Island, Kamakhya Temple and Sivasagar attracted interest from travellers attending the concert. This trend further strengthened Guwahati’s position as a major entry point to the wider North-East region.
Industry observers believe such events are helping introduce new audiences to the region’s cultural and tourism offerings while supporting local economies.
North-East Emerging as Key Live Entertainment Market
The report points to the North-East as one of the fastest-growing markets for live entertainment in India. Known for its strong musical traditions and enthusiastic fan communities, the region is increasingly being included in national and international touring schedules.
Assam hosted 55 ticketed events during 2025, while Guwahati recorded a remarkable 188% increase in live event attendance. These figures reflect growing consumer demand and the region’s expanding importance within the entertainment sector.
Employment and Future Growth Opportunities
Large-scale concerts are also creating short-term employment opportunities. The Post Malone event engaged approximately 2,500 workers across various areas, including production, security, hospitality, logistics and venue operations. Local suppliers and service providers also participated in event-related activities, generating additional business opportunities.
Officials and industry leaders involved in the report emphasized that Assam’s progress has been supported by coordinated policy initiatives, infrastructure investments and efforts to simplify event facilitation processes. They believe sustained collaboration can help establish the state as a long-term destination for global entertainment events.
The momentum is expected to continue, with internationally renowned rock band Guns N’ Roses scheduled to perform in Guwahati on November 17, 2026. The upcoming event is expected to further strengthen Assam’s reputation on the international touring circuit.
As India’s live entertainment sector continues to expand beyond traditional metropolitan centres, Assam is increasingly being viewed as a model for how concerts can support tourism growth, generate employment and contribute to regional economic development.
