Diplomacy – India’s Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Abhay Kumar, carried out an extensive visit to the southern regions of Lankaran and Lerik, engaging with local institutions and community leaders to deepen cooperation between the two countries across several sectors. The visit highlighted growing collaboration in culture, wellness, agriculture, tourism, and environmental protection.

Focus on Cultural Heritage in Lankaran
During his stay in Lankaran, Ambassador Kumar visited the Lankaran Museum of History and Local Lore, where he met Museum Director Leyla Majidova. The visit provided an opportunity to gain insight into the region’s historical legacy and cultural traditions. Discussions also emphasized the museum’s role in preserving and showcasing the heritage of Lankaran for future generations.
Promoting Wellness and Healthy Living
The ambassador also toured the Yenee Wellness Center and held discussions with the institution’s Chief Doctor, Dr. Emil Hidayatli. Talks centered on the potential for expanding awareness of Ayurveda, yoga, and holistic health practices in Azerbaijan.
Dr. Hidayatli spoke about the positive impact of yoga on physical and mental well-being and encouraged wider participation in the practice, particularly as the International Day of Yoga approaches. Both sides explored opportunities for greater cooperation in wellness-related initiatives that could benefit communities in both countries.
Shared Tea Traditions Open New Opportunities
A key part of the visit focused on agriculture. Ambassador Kumar toured a green tea plantation owned by Araz Yagubov, where he learned about Lankaran’s long-established tea cultivation industry. Discussions covered traditional farming methods, modern production techniques, and the importance of tea cultivation to the local economy.
The exchange also highlighted the strong tea-drinking traditions that India and Azerbaijan share. Participants explored possibilities for future cooperation, including knowledge-sharing programs, agricultural innovation, and collaboration within the tea sector.
Exploring Natural Landscapes and Conservation Efforts
The ambassador later visited Hirkan National Park and Khanbulan Lake, two of the region’s most notable natural attractions. The tour showcased the area’s diverse ecosystems, dense forests, and scenic landscapes.
The visit drew attention to ongoing efforts aimed at protecting biodiversity and preserving environmentally significant habitats. Ambassador Kumar reflected on the connection between nature, wellness, and sustainable living, underscoring the importance of environmental stewardship in modern society.
Lerik’s Unique Legacy of Longevity
Continuing his regional tour, Ambassador Kumar traveled to the neighboring district of Lerik, widely known for its unusually high number of long-lived residents. There, he visited the Museum of Longevity, a unique institution dedicated to documenting the lives of centenarians.
Senior Curator Matanat Guliyeva guided the ambassador through the museum’s exhibits and explained Lerik’s international reputation as the “Land of Centenarians.” Located in the picturesque Talysh Mountains, the district is recognized for both its natural beauty and the remarkable longevity of its residents.
Strengthening People-to-People Relations
The visit underscored the growing relationship between India and Azerbaijan at the community level.
