Railways – Indian Railways Advances Digital Network and Passenger Safety Systems

Railways – The Ministry of Railways has reported significant strides in strengthening the telecom and digital backbone of Indian Railways during the 2025–26 period, with a clear emphasis on safety, efficiency, and improved passenger services.

Expansion of Telecom Backbone Enhances Operational Capacity

According to the Ministry, one of the most notable developments has been the modernization of the Unified Telecom Backbone Infrastructure using Internet Protocol Multi-Protocol Label Switching technology. This upgraded network is designed to handle growing data demands and support critical railway operations.

The system allows centralized access to video surveillance feeds and plays a crucial role in supporting key platforms such as train communication systems, reservation services, ticketing operations, freight monitoring, and power management networks. Officials stated that this transition ensures the network remains capable of meeting both current and future operational requirements.

So far, the upgraded IP MPLS system has been successfully implemented at 1,396 railway stations, marking a steady move toward a fully integrated digital railway framework.

AI-Driven Surveillance Strengthens Passenger Security

In a parallel effort to improve safety, Indian Railways has expanded its Video Surveillance System across 1,874 stations nationwide. The system now incorporates advanced artificial intelligence-based analytics, enabling automated detection of unusual activities such as unauthorized entry and prolonged presence in restricted areas.

Additionally, facial recognition technology has been introduced to support real-time identification and monitoring, adding another layer of security. These features are expected to assist authorities in responding quickly to potential threats and maintaining order at busy stations.

Railway officials have previously highlighted the importance of these systems, noting that surveillance cameras and AI tools together form a comprehensive monitoring framework that enhances situational awareness.

Improved Passenger Information Systems for Real-Time Updates

The Ministry also pointed to major upgrades in passenger information services through the expansion of the Integrated Passenger Information System. This system includes digital display boards, coach guidance mechanisms, and public announcement facilities designed to provide accurate and timely updates.

A key improvement has been the integration of this system with the National Train Enquiry System, allowing automated, real-time announcements at stations. This development reduces dependency on manual updates and ensures passengers receive consistent information.

At present, this integrated system has been deployed at 1,405 railway stations, improving communication and helping passengers plan their journeys more effectively.

Communication Systems Introduced in Challenging Terrains

To address safety concerns in difficult geographical areas, Indian Railways has introduced Tunnel Communication Systems across several zones. These systems are particularly important for projects involving long tunnels, including the Udhampur–Srinagar–Baramulla Rail Link.

The technology enables uninterrupted radio communication between personnel inside tunnels and operational control centers. This ensures better coordination, especially in emergency situations, and enhances overall safety for both staff and passengers.

Commitment to Modernization and Digital Integration

The Ministry emphasized that these developments reflect a broader commitment to modernization and the adoption of advanced technologies. By expanding telecom infrastructure, integrating artificial intelligence, and improving information systems, Indian Railways aims to build a more responsive and efficient network.

Officials noted that these efforts align with the larger vision of creating a digitally empowered transport system that prioritizes passenger convenience and operational reliability.

The ongoing initiatives underline a consistent push toward innovation, with the goal of delivering a railway ecosystem that is safer, smarter, and better equipped to meet evolving demands.
