Governance – The Uttar Pradesh government has approved a new initiative aimed at improving public memorials dedicated to Dr B R Ambedkar and other noted social reformers across the state.
The state Cabinet has cleared a financial outlay of Rs 403 crore for a programme that will focus on upgrading, maintaining, and beautifying statues located in all 403 Assembly constituencies. The move is being viewed as part of a broader effort to strengthen outreach among communities that revere these historical figures.
Scheme Structure and Financial Allocation
Under the newly sanctioned plan, each Assembly constituency will receive Rs 1 crore. This amount will be used to support improvements for up to 10 statues within each constituency, ensuring that funds are distributed evenly across regions. Authorities have placed a spending cap of Rs 10 lakh per statue to maintain financial discipline while allowing for meaningful enhancements.
The initiative comes shortly after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath highlighted the need to install protective structures over statues of prominent leaders, including Dr Ambedkar, to prevent damage and ensure their preservation.
Focus on Key Social Reformers
While Dr Ambedkar remains the central figure of the scheme, the government has clarified that other influential personalities will also be included. Statues of Jyotiba Phule, Sant Ravidas, Kabir Das, and Maharishi Valmiki located in public spaces will also be upgraded under this programme.
Officials noted that the intention is not only to preserve these monuments but also to recognise the contributions of leaders who worked towards equality and social reform. The improvements are expected to make these sites more accessible and visually appealing for the public.
Planned Development and Design Standards
The works planned under the scheme include the installation of protective canopies, construction of boundary walls, and the addition of greenery and lighting. These measures are intended to enhance both the safety and appearance of the statues.
Authorities have indicated that a standard design framework will be followed across the state to maintain uniformity. At the same time, local artistic traditions and architectural styles will be incorporated wherever possible to reflect regional identity.
In its initial phase, the programme will cover all statues installed up to December 31, 2025. This ensures that existing memorials receive priority attention before newer installations are considered.
Launch Timeline and Public Awareness
The government has directed officials to promote the scheme across all constituencies on April 14, which marks the birth anniversary of Dr B R Ambedkar. The timing is intended to align the launch with a day of national significance, thereby increasing public awareness and participation.
A government spokesperson confirmed that local administrations will play a key role in ensuring that information about the scheme reaches communities effectively.
Government’s Position on Political Timing
Addressing questions about whether the initiative is linked to upcoming elections, state ministers dismissed such suggestions. Minister Asim Arun described the scheme as part of a continuous development process, emphasising that the government remains committed to honouring leaders associated with social justice.
Finance Minister Suresh Khanna also stated that development decisions should not be viewed through the lens of electoral cycles, noting that governance work continues irrespective of elections.
Broader Impact on Public Spaces
Officials believe the programme will have a wider impact beyond the statues themselves. By improving surrounding areas with better lighting, landscaping, and infrastructure, the initiative is expected to enhance the overall environment of public spaces where these memorials are located.
The government has positioned the scheme as a step toward preserving cultural heritage while also improving civic amenities. With a structured rollout and defined budget limits, authorities aim to ensure both accountability and visible results on the ground.
