Housing – Delhi LG Reviews DDA Flats, Orders Swift Action on Issues

Housing – Delhi Lieutenant-Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Thursday visited the Swabhiman Apartments in Ashok Vihar, a housing project developed by the Delhi Development Authority (DDA), to assess living conditions and hear residents’ concerns firsthand. The visit comes months after the allotment of these flats to families relocated from Jhuggi Jhopri clusters as part of a major urban housing initiative.

Residents Share Concerns During Inspection

During his interaction with residents, Sandhu noted that many expressed appreciation for being provided permanent homes under the government’s housing scheme. However, several occupants also raised practical issues affecting their daily lives. Complaints included water seepage in some units, inefficient garbage disposal systems, malfunctioning lifts in certain towers, and disturbances caused by anti-social elements in the परिसर.

The Lieutenant-Governor acknowledged these concerns and emphasized the importance of resolving them promptly. He described such feedback as vital for ensuring that large-scale housing projects continue to serve their intended purpose effectively.

Background of the Housing Project

The Swabhiman Apartments are part of a broader initiative aimed at rehabilitating residents of informal settlements into well-constructed housing complexes. In 2025, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated 1,675 flats built by the DDA and personally handed over keys to beneficiaries. The project was widely seen as a significant step toward improving urban living conditions and promoting inclusive development in the national capital.

Designed with essential amenities, the apartments were expected to provide a dignified and secure living environment. However, as with many large residential projects, ongoing maintenance and management remain critical to sustaining quality standards.

Emphasis on Maintenance and Accountability

Sandhu underlined that the long-term success of such housing schemes depends not only on construction but also on proper upkeep. He stressed that infrastructure of this scale should not fall into disrepair due to negligence or lack of coordination among responsible agencies.

According to officials, the Lieutenant-Governor has instructed the DDA, district administration, and Delhi Police to work together in addressing the reported issues. These directions include ensuring timely repairs, improving sanitation systems, restoring lift functionality, and maintaining law and order within the परिसर.

Ensuring Safe and Livable Communities

Authorities have been asked to treat the matter with urgency to prevent minor issues from escalating into larger problems. The administration aims to ensure that residents feel secure and comfortable in their new homes, which were provided as part of a transformative urban policy.

Officials also indicated that regular monitoring mechanisms may be strengthened to track maintenance standards and respond quickly to complaints. This approach is expected to improve accountability and enhance the overall living experience for residents.

Moving Toward Sustainable Urban Development

The inspection highlights the government’s broader focus on citizen-centric governance, where feedback from residents plays a key role in shaping policy implementation. Projects like Swabhiman Apartments are seen as important milestones in the vision of building a developed Delhi and, by extension, a developed India.

While the initiative has brought significant benefits to thousands of families, authorities recognize that maintaining these gains requires continuous attention. Addressing operational challenges and ensuring efficient service delivery will be essential for the long-term success of such housing programs.
