Professor Killed in Rajouri Accident

One of the incidents took place in the Kallar area of Rajouri district, where a college professor died following a tragic vehicle accident. The victim, Dr. Tabassum Naz, who served as an assistant professor at Poonch Degree College, was travelling with her husband when their car lost control and veered off the road.

Local residents were quick to respond, reaching the site and helping rescue the injured. Both victims were immediately transported to a nearby healthcare facility. Despite medical efforts, Dr. Naz could not survive her injuries. Her husband, Hameed, remains in critical condition and is receiving treatment.

Authorities have arrived at the scene and initiated an investigation to understand the circumstances that led to the accident.

Fatal Collision in Ganderbal

In a separate incident reported from Rail Gund in Ganderbal district, a head-on collision between two vehicles resulted in the death of one individual. The deceased was a resident of Kargil district in Ladakh.

Four others were injured in the crash, including two tourists from Maharashtra and two individuals from Ladakh. All injured persons were taken to nearby medical facilities for treatment. Officials are currently assessing the situation and investigating the cause of the collision.

Pattern of Accidents in Hilly Areas

Road accidents are not uncommon in the hilly districts of Jammu and Kashmir. Regions such as Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Doda, and Kishtwar frequently report such incidents due to challenging terrain, narrow roads, and sharp turns.

Earlier this year in January, a major accident in Doda district claimed the lives of ten soldiers and left eleven others injured. The Army vehicle they were travelling in reportedly skidded off the road near Khanni Top and fell into a deep gorge along the Bhaderwah-Chamba interstate route.

Causes Behind Frequent Mishaps

Officials have identified several contributing factors behind the high number of road accidents in the region. Over-speeding, overloading of vehicles, aggressive driving behavior, and poorly maintained roads are among the primary causes.

The difficult geography further increases the risk, especially in areas with steep gradients and blind curves. Weather conditions such as rain and fog also play a role in reducing visibility and road grip.

Measures to Improve Road Safety

In response to the growing number of accidents, the traffic department has intensified enforcement efforts. Special checking teams have been deployed across sensitive routes to monitor violations and ensure compliance with traffic rules.

Regional Transport Offices have also issued clear guidelines and increased public awareness through media campaigns. Strict action is being taken against offenders, including suspension of driving licences and cancellation of vehicle registrations in cases of reckless driving.

Authorities have also warned that in cases where minors are found operating vehicles, legal action may be taken against guardians, along with seizure of the vehicle.

Ongoing Concerns

Despite these measures, road safety continues to be a pressing issue in Jammu and Kashmir. Experts suggest that along with enforcement, there is a need for better infrastructure, driver education, and regular vehicle checks to reduce the frequency of such incidents.

As investigations into the recent accidents continue, officials are urging drivers to follow traffic rules strictly and exercise caution, especially while navigating the region’s challenging roads.
