Weather – Heatwave Alert Issued for Mumbai Region as Temperatures Rise

Weather – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning about rising temperatures and uncomfortable weather conditions across parts of Maharashtra, particularly in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, as the summer heat begins to intensify.

Mumbai heatwave alert rising temperatures

The IMD has cautioned that isolated areas within Mumbai’s surrounding regions, including Thane and Raigad, may experience heatwave-like conditions on Monday. Alongside this, districts such as Palghar and Ratnagiri are expected to face hot and humid weather, adding to the discomfort for residents.

Rising Temperatures in Mumbai Region

According to data recorded at the Colaba observatory, Mumbai experienced a maximum temperature of 34.2 degrees Celsius on Sunday, with relative humidity levels reaching 62 percent. These conditions contributed to a sticky and warm atmosphere across the city.

For Monday, weather officials have predicted a further increase in daytime temperature, which could reach up to 35 degrees Celsius. Night temperatures are expected to remain relatively stable at around 23 degrees Celsius. The sky is likely to remain clear, allowing more direct sunlight and contributing to the overall rise in heat levels.

Thunderstorms Expected in Interior Districts

While coastal areas are dealing with heat and humidity, parts of interior Maharashtra may witness a different weather pattern. The IMD has forecast thunderstorms accompanied by lightning in several districts of South Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.

Regions including Satara, Sangli, Sholapur, Nanded, Latur, and Dharashiv are likely to receive light to moderate rainfall. These weather events may also be accompanied by gusty winds reaching speeds of 30 to 40 kilometers per hour. Authorities have advised residents in these areas to remain cautious, particularly during lightning activity.

State Records Fluctuating Temperature Extremes

Across Maharashtra, temperatures have been steadily climbing over the past few days. On Sunday, Washim recorded the highest temperature in the state at 36.6 degrees Celsius, reflecting the ongoing warming trend.

In contrast, significantly lower temperatures were noted in certain areas. Dhule Agricultural College and the Niphad Wheat Research Centre both recorded minimum temperatures of 12 degrees Celsius, indicating notable variation between daytime and nighttime conditions in different parts of the state.

National Weather Highlights

Beyond Maharashtra, temperature patterns across India also showed variation. Rajasthan’s Ganganagar reported one of the highest temperatures in the country at 39.9 degrees Celsius, highlighting intense heat conditions in northern regions.

Meanwhile, Ludhiana in Punjab recorded one of the lowest temperatures at 11.2 degrees Celsius, showing that cooler conditions still persist in some northern pockets, particularly during early mornings and late nights.

Advisory for Residents

With temperatures expected to rise further in the coming days, weather experts have advised people in affected regions to take necessary precautions. Staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, and wearing light, breathable clothing are recommended to reduce the risk of heat-related discomfort or illness.

In areas where thunderstorms are predicted, residents are encouraged to stay indoors during lightning activity and secure loose objects that could be affected by strong winds.

The IMD continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as weather patterns evolve across the region.
